Wireless Broadband Technology Used To Provide Internet Service

ADAPTIVE BROADBAND CORPORATION (Nasdaq National Market:ADAP) announced today that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has completed the required inspection and tests of AB-Access(TM), the company's broadband wireless Internet access product, and has issued a grant of equipment authorization for use in the U-NII (Unlicensed -- National Information Infrastructure) band.

"Part 15 of the FCC rules are designed to prevent the operation of products that emit radio transmissions from interfering with the operation of other such products," explained Dr. Daniel Scharre, Adaptive Broadband's chief technology officer. "The process is a rigorous one, not a 'rubber-stamp.' AB-Access is one of very few products of its type to have received FCC certification."

$10 billion U-NII Market

Adaptive Broadband recently signed contracts with Fuzion Wireless Communications, a Boca Raton, Florida-based CLEC, and I3S, an Irving, Texas-based service provider, to use AB-Access for high-speed Internet access in their markets. Both companies will initially deploy in the U-NII band, which Adaptive Broadband cites as instrumental in meeting the demand for affordable, ultra high-speed Internet access. The company believes the U-NII market represents a $10 billion opportunity, based on feedback from its customers relating to their future plans. The AB-Access technology was engineered to work at any frequency from 2 to 42 GHz. The first releases for AB-Access are for applications using the 5 GHz (U-NII) and 2.5 GHz (MMDS) frequency bands, while other frequencies are under development.

400 Times Faster than Dial-Up

Using AB-Access, Fuzion and I3S will deliver Internet access at speeds up to 25 megabits per second -- up to 400 times faster than dial-up service over a 56K modem. This will allow applications such as web browsing, file transfers, interactive remote applications, real-time video conferencing and full-motion streaming video -- simultaneously and over a single high-speed Internet connection.

In the first commercial deployment of AB-Access, Fuzion (www.gofuzion.com) plans to deliver high-speed wireless Internet access to thousands of businesses across Florida in 1999, with a national rollout scheduled for early 2000.

I3S (www.I3S.com) has contracts with independent apartment owners and residential REITs (real estate investment trusts) to provide high-speed wireless Internet access to multi-dwelling units (MDUs) across the country, using AB-Access. A number of other independent operating companies (IOCs), telecommunications carriers, and telephone companies are currently studying and/or conducting trials with AB-Access for use in their service areas, Dr. Scharre said.
