Lawson Software, the Enterprise behind the Internet, today announced it has completed an independent audit validating its preparations for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The audit results reinforce Lawson's early commitment to making its healthcare e-business applications fully compliant with HIPAA, once final regulations are determined. Lawson made the announcement in Dallas at HIMSS 2000, the annual Healthcare Information Management Systems Society conference and exhibition.

An independent review of Lawson's HIPAA readiness was recently conducted by Dr. Steven S. Lazarus, Ph.D., FHIMSS, president of Boundary Information Group and chair-elect of the Work Group for Electronic Data Interchange. Lawson has taken significant steps to prepare for HIPAA compliance. As part of its process, Lawson will thoroughly review all applicable HIPAA regulations as they are finalized. Lawson will also implement changes which affect its software, identify potential compliance issues with use of Lawson applications that need to be addressed by customer policies or procedures, and train all of its employees on HIPAA confidentiality regulations.

"Lawson is taking a very proactive approach to HIPAA compliance by evaluating its applications for potential issues in transaction standards, standard code sets, unique health identifiers, security standards, electronic signature standards, health plan information transfer and privacy," Lazarus said. "HIPAA is the most sweeping legislation to affect healthcare in 30 years and will impact nearly every business process in the industry. Lawson is taking a lead position among non-clinical application vendors in reviewing its solutions and processes to prepare for HIPAA compliance."

Lawson officials say the company is committed to making HIPAA compliance as painless as possible for its customers.

"We know that our customers will need to focus significant time and effort on their clinical systems, staff training, and policies and procedures, so Lawson is taking the worry out of the process when it comes to their business management software," said Tony Marzulli, vice president, Healthcare Marketing, Lawson Software.
