MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000

VERITAS(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the industry's leading enterprise-class application storage management software provider, today announced that Nevada Power, the nation's fastest-growing electric utility, has chosen VERITAS NetBackup(TM) to support its system backup requirements and protect the company's mission-critical data.

As Nevada Power moved from a mainframe to open systems, it was in need of a backup solution that could grow with the company and meet its changing storage management demands. With VERITAS NetBackup, Nevada Power can protect and manage its most-critical information.

Currently, Nevada Power (a subsidiary of Sierra Pacific Resources) provides service to approximately 600,000 customers in southern Nevada and 300,000 customers through its sister company, Sierra Pacific Power in northern Nevada. VERITAS NetBackup has the scalability to manage Nevada Power's rapidly expanding customer base. Due to rapid population growth in Nevada, as well as its recent merger, Nevada Power expects to grow extensively within the next 18 to 24 months, more than doubling the amount of data to be backed up in the upcoming year. Its sister company, Sierra Pacific Power, is also standardizing on VERITAS NetBackup.

"In the midst of a changing industry and with the additional challenge of meeting southern Nevada's robust population growth, we pride ourselves with the delivery of electric energy services that provide value, comfort and convenience to the communities we serve," said Timothy Arndt, senior project manager for enterprise backup, Nevada Power. "In order to provide this level of service, we selected VERITAS NetBackup for many reasons. With such a scalable solution, we are reassured that our critical information as well as our customers are reliably protected."

After a competitive evaluation of top storage management software solutions, Nevada Power selected VERITAS NetBackup for consistently meeting its key requirements for effective management and protection of the company's servers. Nevada Power's key requirements included centralized backup policy management and quick and efficient backup and restore. VERITAS NetBackup allows Nevada Power to manage and back up 800GB of data from one central location. High performance and heterogeneous support for AIX, Windows NT and NetWare, in addition to Oracle and Microsoft Exchange database protection, made VERITAS NetBackup the clear choice for Nevada Power Company.

Equally important to Nevada Power is VERITAS Software's relationship with Oracle and the ability of VERITAS NetBackup to protect Oracle databases. Nevada Power uses an Oracle8 database to manage large amounts of information securely, reliably and economically over computer networks delivering rapid information access. Since VERITAS NetBackup delivers online, non-disruptive backup of Oracle databases, Nevada Power does not need to shut down the database - and shut out users - to perform backups.

"The selection of VERITAS NetBackup by Nevada Power reinforces VERITAS Software's position as a leading provider of backup and recovery software applications," said Paul A. Sallaberry, executive vice president, VERITAS Software. "This comprehensive solution has the capacity to meet the growing needs of Nevada Power, allowing the Company to continue servicing its customers with the utmost reliability and efficiency."
