LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000

Contract Approaches $14 Million

Communications and Power Industries (CPI) Satcom Division, Palo Alto, Calif., the worldwide leader in satellite communication high power amplifiers (HPAs), announced that it has signed an agreement to supply equipment to supply equipment to Unique Broadband Systems, which in turn will provide equipment to Hughes Network Systems for the XM Radio DARS system.

The announcement was made at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas.

The HPAs are an essential element of the terrestrial wireless portion of the XM Radio satellite service, which will provide digital-quality audio programming across the United States.

The contract is valued at nearly $14 million.

"CPI is excited about the opportunity to apply its cutting edge design technology to such a groundbreaking satellite application such as XM Radio," said Rick Schaffzin, CPI Satcom's president and general manager. "We're very proud that the Unique Broadband Systems/Hughes Network Systems team chose us as a partner in this next generation broadcasting venture."

Alex Dolgonos, President & CEO of Unique Broadband Systems, said, "We are pleased to have selected CPI to work with us on our contract with Hughes. CPI has demonstrated a strong expertise in producing HPAs, which will form an integral part of the network to be constructed by Hughes."

CPI's high power amplifiers incorporate leading edge, multi-stage depressed collector (MSDC) klystron design, providing major efficiency improvements and excellent linear performance. The efficiency improvements provide significant operating savings due to both reduced prime power requirements and increased life expectancy, as the klystron runs cooler than single collector designs. Modular design of the power supply and monitor and control sections contribute to improved reliability, sparing simplicity and fast MTTR.
