Company Adds Wireless Instant Messaging

and Network Integration Expertise

to Accelerate Software.com's Growth in Wireless Internet Market

Software.com Inc. (Nasdaq:SWCM), a leading developer of carrier-scale, Internet infrastructure applications, today announced it has completed the acquisition of @mobile.com Inc., a leading wireless Internet application service provider with wireless Instant Messaging technology and Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN) integration expertise.

The acquisition of @mobile.com will enable Software.com to deliver advanced, wireless Internet offerings, including unified messaging and true Instant Messaging, as well as add support for wireless applications to its carrier-scale LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) directory.

"We are rapidly integrating @mobile.com's suite of applications into Software.com's offerings, which will be delivered as mobile Internet infrastructure software to service providers worldwide," said Software.com Founder and CEO John MacFarlane. "The combination of Software.com and @mobile.com's products will enable service providers to deliver next generation services that customers demand, such as wireless instant messaging."

On March 9, 2000, Software.com announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire all outstanding stock and options in @mobile.com for 3.75 million shares of Software.com common stock. It is anticipated that the deal will be accounted for as a pooling of interests.

The @mobile.com deal is an important step in Software.com's acquisition strategy initiated last year with the purchase of wireless Internet infrastructure developer Telarc, Inc. As a result of that acquisition, Software.com integrated Short Messaging Services (SMS) technology into its InterMail(R) messaging platform.

Software.com intends to "productize" @mobile.com's Instant Messaging service. In addition, Software.com plans to adapt its carrier-scale LDAP directory to enable mobile service providers to more effectively manage and expand their wireless data services. Once the integration of @mobile.com's technology into Software.com's offerings is complete, mobile service providers will be able to leverage the InterMail platform to track and maintain their subscribers' user profiles -- including their presence and location information -- enabling providers to tailor and manage data services for each of their subscribers.

Executive Appointments

In addition, Software.com today named several former @mobile.com employees to executive positions. Michael Buhrmann, formerly president and CEO of @mobile.com and a 15-year wireless industry veteran, has been appointed general manager of wireless services. Other appointments include Bill Gossman as vice president for business strategy, Mike Pirie as chief information officer and Dave Paulson as vice president of sales for the Americas.

Software.com will maintain @mobile.com's office in Bellevue, Wash. As of the close of the merger, the combined entity has approximately 434 employees, including 61 employees in Bellevue.
