Solutions For The Mobile Workforce
Syscan International Inc. (CDN:SYSN.) ("Syscan") is pleased to announce that Peter Laidlaw, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), MaxLink Communications Inc., will join Syscan's Technology Advisory Council (TAC).
Mr. Laidlaw has 24 years experience in the design and implementation of network, broadcast and communications facilities. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer at MaxLink Communications Inc., a company licensed by Industry Canada to establish and operate a new, Canada-wide telecommunications network based on 28 GHz, local multipoint communications systems technology. He is responsible for the overall engineering planning for the design and deployment of RF access and transport systems, fibre transport systems and telecommunications switching systems.
The Syscan Technology Advisory Council has been established to bring new ideas to the Company and develop the technical strategic direction for Syscan as it expands into new mobile wireless communications markets. It will identify new products/software/technologies required to meet pressing market needs; support management in preparing the business case for R&D expenditures; provide technical oversight on R&D and new product initiatives; and assist Syscan in developing technical alliances within the wireless communications business community.
As one of the TAC's founding members, Mr. Laidlaw will assist the Company to attract membership to the TAC, seek out ideas and technologies that can be transferred to the company, participate in the tasks outlined above and provide technical leadership in establishing Syscan as a strong player in providing mobile middleware applications in North America. He is currently a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the IEEE, a Communications Society Fellow and a member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
Andre Larente, President and CEO of Syscan, stated that "Peter's joining the Syscan TAC strengthens our knowledge of the current wireless communications marketplace and brings additional real world experience to the Syscan team."
Syscan also wishes to announce that it has completed the purchase of Lemirtech Solutions and accordingly pursuant to the terms of the purchase agreement (see Press Release dated March 8, 2000) has issued 100,000 common shares from treasury valued at $6.00 per share to the principles of Lemirtech.
Syscan builds solutions that integrate wireless communications, GPS technologies, packet switching systems, mobile printing and other mobile peripherals including software, which allows these devices to communicate into larger global networks. This segment of the Information Technology sector is currently experiencing dramatic growth as vendors rush to the market with new products and service offerings to take advantage of low cost hand held computers integrated with lower cost communications through the internet and new satellite and digital communication systems.
Syscan's new strategic expansion plan into the mobile wireless communications market takes advantage of its 26 years experience developing products for this sector. It is focusing its R&D efforts on developing new products that incorporate the emerging Symbian operating system for the next generation of cellular devices and on "Bluetooth" and "WAP" wireless protocol-based applications.
