PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2000

Evergreen and Caldera form strategic alliance to

deliver the industry's most powerful, open standards-based

Linux-for-EBusiness solution.

Evergreen Internet Inc., the leader in 100 percent open standards, distributed e-commerce components, and Caldera Systems(TM) Inc. (Nasdaq:CALD), the "Linux for eBusiness" leader, Tuesday announced a strategic alliance to deliver the first fully integrated, open standards-based Linux for E-Business solution, OpenLinux(TM) eBuilder.

As part of the agreement, Caldera will license and distribute Evergreen's ECommerce Components and Services Platform, ECential(TM) as part of it's OpenLinux eBuilder e-commerce suite, which also includes IBM's WebSphere(TM) Standard Edition, VisualAge(TM) Java(R) 3.0, and MySQL(TM).

The integration of ECential(TM) with OpenLinux delivers a powerful, open standards-based platform to build any Business-to-Business and Business-to-Consumer solution centered around Java(TM), XML, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB(TM)), and Open Java Database Connectivity (JDBC).

Value Added Resellers (VARs), Developers, and Integrators wanting the cost/performance advantages of OpenLinux can now build robust, reliable, and scalable e-commerce and e-business solutions using the ECential Open Commerce Architecture (OCA).

By leveraging the ECential services and components as "building blocks," VARs, Developers, and Integrators now have the greatest flexibility to customize and develop any commerce solution using open standard components.

"The developer community of Linux will love the power, the open extensibility, and the e-commerce components of ECential, empowering them to develop robust e-commerce solutions. Caldera and Evergreen are delivering the best of both worlds -- complete e-commerce and e-business functionality and 100 percent open standards tools and building blocks," said David V. Clare, executive vice president for Evergreen.

The integrated installation and configuration within the OpenLinux eBuilder product greatly reduces the complexity and costs of setup and deployment. The unique integration allows ECential sites to be easily and quickly deployed remotely within seconds. OpenLinux eBuilder increases Evergreen's support of multiple platforms and application servers.

ECential is currently available across Solaris, NT, and other Java-based platforms. The unique cost/performance advantages of Linux, coupled with the powerful integration, installation, and configuration of ECential with OpenLinux, makes the OpenLinux eBuilder solution ideal for distributed e-commerce solutions and applications.

"The market is demanding a Linux-based, open platform for e-commerce and Caldera is responding with an industrial strength package, said Phillip E. Broadbent, president and chief executive officer of Evergreen. "ECential's open architecture is a perfect fit for a multi-vendor solution environment such as eBuilder.

"We anticipate an enthusiastic response from the eSolutions Provider (eSP) channel and will work diligently with Caldera to demonstrate the considerable strength of this offering."

Both companies will work together to develop the electronic Solutions Provider (eSP) channel to provide VARs, ISPs, and ASPs with a new component framework, enabling robust e-commerce and e-business solutions that leverage existing applications and services.

"ECential's Open Commerce Architecture and EComponents are fundamental to eBuilder's value proposition," said Ransom Love, president and CEO of Caldera Systems Inc. "The use of open standards and an open commerce architecture are critical to maintaining a competitive advantage in e-business.

"Companies must be empowered to add new applications and components as strategy mandates. The combination of eBuilder with ECential, provides a very robust application suite, enabling businesses to develop and deploy real-world, robust e-business solutions."

The integration of ECential into the Caldera eBuilder suite facilitates the use of swappable components and distributed software operations that are necessary to manage large volumes of Internet transactions across multiple server platforms.

As a result, OpenLinux eBuilder provides the tools for corporations and service providers to develop and deploy mission-critical e-commerce applications in a highly scalable, high value and low cost environment.
