Conrail Selects SunGard for Enterprise Outsourcing Services; SunGard BCIS to Provide Data Center Management and Business Continuity Services

SunGard Business Continuity and Internet Services (BCIS) an operating unit of SunGard (NYSE:SDS), has been selected by Conrail, a provider of rail freight services and a business unit of CSX Corporation (NYSE:CSX) and Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE:NSC), as its provider of data center management and business continuity services in a multi-year agreement valued at more than $20 million.
SunGard BCIS will provide Conrail with a complete infrastructure service comprising 24/7 management of large-scale IBM mainframe and midrange systems, including systems administration, network monitoring, data backup and vaulting, and disaster recovery, as well as help desk and desktop services.
Project planning and deployment activities are already underway, to ensure a smooth orderly transition to the SunGard enterprise outsourcing environment.
Conrail's chief information officer, Sam Adenbaum, said that "SunGard has done an excellent job of tailoring an effective, cost-efficient program that meets the long-term needs of Conrail. Using SunGard's services allows us to focus on managing our business-critical transportation applications."
SunGard will oversee the day-to-day data center, software and network management activities and assume the responsibility for Conrail's strategic technical objectives. Integration of Conrail's data center operations at the SunGard facility in New Jersey is expected to be completed by the middle of 2000.
