VERITAS Software is working closely with the U.S. Census Bureau's information technology (IT) department to develop a Storage Area Network (SAN) for off-site tape backup and disaster recovery at two major Census Bureau locations. This SAN will provide centralized management and can be tightly integrated with the existing VERITAS Software solution that currently provides data backup services for more than 500 clients.

The U.S. Census Bureau's IT department conducted a two-year test and evaluation of enterprise data solutions that would not only merge with its existing backup solutions, but scale to provide sophisticated, consistent and fast backup solutions to several different locations. The evaluation also called for a solution that would perform the backup- and recovery function while maintaining continuous availability of data, and ensuring disaster recovery capabilities. The U.S. Census Bureau infrastructure incorporates Novell NetWare, Microsoft Windows NT, Compaq OpenVMS and UNIX operating systems, running on a multitude of platforms at its headquarters in Suitland, Maryland, and at more than 500 field offices throughout the United States. The VERITAS Software solution for the U.S. Census Bureau includes VERITAS Backup Exec(TM) for NetWare, VERITAS Backup Exec for NT, VERITAS NetBackup(TM), VERITAS Storage Migrator(TM), VERITAS Database Edition(TM) for Oracle, and VERITAS FirstWatch(TM).
