Notes of Interest:
For the first time in its 30 weeks at number one on The Lycos 50, Pokemon slips out of the coveted top spot to land at number four as renegade Napster slides into first place with Web users. The recent Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) lawsuit against Napster, accusing it of music piracy, and the subsequent federal court decision to shut Napster down, sent users scrambling for last minute downloads and Napster news. The Napster controversy also sent users frantically searching for other alternative music systems including Gnutella (#7) and Freenet (#44).
Other Notes of Interest:
The July 25 crash of the Air France Concorde pushed searches for the ill-fated supersonic jet to number eight on the list. About six percent of all Concorde searches were for the dramatic video of the jet's engines on fire. Sad, but true, several hundred users were searching for "Concorde jokes."
New This Week:
Stephen King scored huge numbers with users as his experimental pay-per-view online book The Plant made its debut at number 36.
Final Factoid:
GOP vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney didn't get enough searches to make The Lycos 50, but he did get enough to tie him in popularity with the television hit soap opera, "Days of Our Lives."
