Also new is a compact transportable unit that offers AC/DC operation

An upgraded DVD player line debuts from AIWA this month, including a unit that plays MP3-encoded CDs and a compact transportable model.

The new AIWA XD-DV370 is a full-featured home DVD player that offers the added bonus of built-in MP3 decoding, allowing it to play MP-3-encoded CDs. As a result, MP3 music files can be dubbed undecoded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc for playback on the XD-DV370.

Other XD-DV370 features include a 96kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter, a 10-bit video D/A converter, a Dolby Digital/DTS digital output (offering both optical and coaxial connectors), dual stereo RCA outputs, and component, S-Video and composite video outputs.

The player provides forward and reverse search at X2, X4, X16 and X100 speeds, forward slow play at 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 normal speed and reverse slow play at 1/2, 1/8 and 1/16 normal speed. Its zoom capability offers X4 and X16 magnification, there is a multi-language on-screen display and it comes with a remote control.

The XD-DV370 measures 17" x 3-1/2" x 8-1/2" (W x H x D) and weighs six pounds. It is available this month at a suggested retail price of $300.00.

For those looking for a multi-purpose player, AIWA offers the new XD-DV170, a small, lightweight player that offers AC/DC operation. The unit is ideal for consumers who might want a player that's easily moved from one TV to another, or from one house to another @ a vacation home, for example. What's more, the DC power option allows the unit to be used in a vehicle using an external monitor. Available as an option is an adapter to power the unit thorough a car's accessory power outlet.

The XD-DV170 plays DVDs, CDs, CD-R/RWs and VCDs. It includes a 96kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter and a 10-bit video D/A converter. There's an optical digital output (Dolby Digital/DTS), one set of analog RCA outputs, plus one S-Video and one composite video output. The player provides forward and reverse search at X2, X8 and X32 speeds, forward slow play at 1/2, 1/5 and 1/30 normal speed and reverse slow play at 1/2 and 1/15 normal speed. Other features include Q Surround for creating surround sound effects from two audio channels, multi-language on-screen display and a remote control.

The XD-DV170 measures 9" x 2-1/2" x 7" (W x H x D) and weighs two pounds. It is available this month at a suggested retail price of $350.00.
