Napster, Inc., the world's largest file sharing community, has announced an allegiance with Santa Monica-based VAGRANT RECORDS to sponsor two simultaneous fall tours for the label. The deal -- the first of its kind involving Napster and a record label -- comes on the heels of the successful Napster-sponsored tour featuring Limp Bizkit and Cypress Hill. The first tour, featuring Face to Face, Saves the Day, Alkaline Trio and A Newfound Glory, will kick-off August 23 in San Diego, CA in support of their latest Lady Luck release Reactionary. The Get Up Kids will headline the second tour, which hits the road September 1 Lawrence, KS, with supporting acts The Anniversary and Koufax. The tour rides the wave of the band's most recent Heroes and Villains release Something To Write Home About. Both Lady Luck Records and Heroes and Villains are imprints of Vagrant Records.

"We are proud to support these tours and are excited to work with two lineups of great bands who embrace the Internet and the potential of new technologies," said Napster VP of Marketing Liz Brooks, noting that Face To Face is one of the most popular punk rock acts in the country today. Consistently drawing upwards of 3,000 people to each live show, the band has released five studio albums and a live record, selling more than 1 million records worldwide. The Get Up Kids, leaders of the new wave of "emo" bands, have a strong indie rock following. Their current album, Something To Write Home About has sold more than 100,000 copies since its release, keeping the band in Billboard's Top 50 Alternative New Artist charts for 42 weeks running.

An alliance with Napster is most fitting for provocative Southern California punk band Face To Face, whose digital legacy is ever evolving. The band -- TREVER KEITH (vocals, guitars), SCOTT SHIFFLET (bass), CHAD YARO (guitar) and PETE PARADA (drums) -- recently allowed the public to vote -- via the internet -- on which new songs would appear on Reactionary. The campaign was so successful that the six-week voting period tallied nearly two million votes from fans worldwide. The band embraces file-sharing technology as yet another great way to reach their audience. "Napster enables fans to trade music with other fans," says Keith. "I've been a recording artist for ten years, and I know what it's like to be ripped off. Napster does not 'rip off' artists."

"Based on the number of emails we get from fans saying they first discovered our bands on Napster, there isn't a doubt in my mind that Napster has driven more people into record stores than it's kept away," said Rich Egan, co-owner of Vagrant Records and manager of both Face To Face And The Get Up Kids. "Anything that gets music into the hands of more people is positive. All of our releases have ended up on Napster. What am I going to do, tell 20 million people to stop listening?"

Additionally, Matt Pryor, lead singer/guitarist of Kansas City-based band The Get Up Kids, sees the opportunity afforded by the Internet. "The Napster controversy seems pretty cut and dried to me. Record labels are worried about it because they have the most to lose by people taking their 'product'. Fortunately we make music, not 'product'. The more people who hear our music, the happier we are."

The tours will generate a number of exciting online features, including digital downloads of the live show, MP3 files of individual songs performed on the tour and other real-time tour updates - all of which will be accessible via the Napster website (www.napster.com) as well as the Napster software application. "This is about capturing the live shows and getting them out to the Napster community," continued Egan. "We are encouraging kids to bring recording devices to the shows, and it's our hope that every show will end up traded within the Napster community. In this way the fans can actively participate in compiling the entire tour and saving it for posterity's sake. This is no different than Grateful Dead fans swapping bootlegs -- it's just the Y2K version. These are some of the best live bands around today. People need to hear them."

In the meantime, stay tuned to the bands' respective websites (www.facetofacemusic.com and www.thegetupkids.net) for up-to-the-minute news regarding both groundbreaking tours brought to you by Napster.
