Enhanced Utility Suite Provides Consumers and Small Businesses
the Most Effective, Easy-to-Use Toolset For Complete PC Protection
& Problem Solving
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC) today announced Norton SystemWorks 2001, the first multiplatform edition of the best-selling utility suite, with support for Windows 9x, Windows Millennium, Windows NT, and Windows 2000.
Norton SystemWorks 2001 features new versions of all the products, improved system performance, and increased ease-of-use.
"The enhancements to Norton SystemWorks 2001 enable Windows users of all levels of expertise to keep their systems operating at optimal performance levels," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec's Consumer Product Division. "By delivering best-of-breed solutions for virus protection, problem-solving, system maintenance, PC diagnostics, and optimization -- all designed to work together in a tightly integrated suite -- Symantec is ensuring that consumers and small businesses are able to enjoy the peace of mind that comes from safe and productive computing."
Norton SystemWorks 2001 Standard Edition includes Norton AntiVirus 2001, Norton Utilities 2001, Norton CleanSweep 2001, and Norton Web Services, a free Internet-based service powered by ZDNet Updates for problem solving, self-help, and extended support services. Norton SystemWorks 2001 Professional Edition includes all the products in Norton SystemWorks 2001 as well as Norton Ghost 2001 and WinFax 10.0 Basic Edition to provide small businesses and power users convenient system migration/backup and fax capabilities.
Enhanced Problem-Solving
Also new in both versions of Norton SystemWorks 2001 is Symantec Web Partners, offering consumers access to third-party online providers of complementary services in the problem-solving category directly from the suite's user interface. The Symantec Web partners include Expertcity, Xdrive, and PromiseMark providing Norton SystemWorks users access to real-time, person-to-person computer help, online file access and storage, and Internet and data related protection plans.
A key feature of Norton SystemWorks 2001 is the new One Button Checkup that provides users an easy way to conduct a quick system check and identify and fix problems. Accessible from the main page, One Button Checkup addresses the most troublesome problems that can degrade system performance, including registry corruption, fragmentation levels, viruses in memory, disk space, and more.
Increased System Performance
Norton SystemWorks 2001 also includes several enhancements to increase system performance. An improved LiveUpdate feature automatically senses an open Internet connection then checks and automatically retrieves and installs any available virus definition updates, which ensures users have the most up-to-date protection against malicious code. New SmartScan technology intelligently finds all files with executable code that must be scanned for viruses, thus eliminating the need to scan all files in the system, providing unmatched protection and performance. SmartScan also improves file-scanning performance and significantly reduces system impact resulting from constant background monitoring for viruses in AutoProtect. Norton SystemWorks 2001 continues to scan e-mail automatically as it is received, detecting viruses in attachments before the user accesses the attachment, eliminating the risk of unknowingly forwarding the virus to others.
Norton SystemWorks 2001 offers users the ability to run Fast & Safe from the CD, enabling them to save space by cleaning their hard drives before installing the suite. Once installed, Norton SystemWorks 2001 features centralized help, giving users the ability to more easily search the integrated product suite, find a feature, and then fix a problem with any of the suite's products from anywhere in Norton SystemWorks.
Security Assessment
Also new to Norton SystemWorks 2001 is Symantec's Security Analyzer, a valuable web-based PC security assessment tool that carefully evaluates a PC's Internet security in three key areas -- susceptibility to hackers, risk of infection by a computer virus and loss of personal information. Information provided back to users explains the security threats and offers options on how to eliminate the vulnerability.
Pricing and Availability
Norton SystemWorks 2001 Standard and Professional Editions are available for an estimated retail price of US$59.95 and US$99.95, respectively. Users of Symantec point products may upgrade to Norton SystemWorks for US$39.95 with a $20 mail-in rebate or Norton SystemWorks Professional Edition for US$69.95 with $30 mail-in rebate. Customers can purchase Norton SystemWorks 2001 from various retail locations, Symantec's online store at www.SymantecStore.com, as well as other online retailers.
