STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 2000

Today, (NASDAQ:ERICY) Ericsson announced that Cable & Wireless HKT, has deployed broadband Internet services throughout the region using Ericsson's AXI 520 IP backbone routers.

The routers will handle Internet traffic to and from Cable & Wireless HKT's Powerb@se data centers. With six world-class centers located throughout the region, Powerb@se is currently Hong Kong's largest data center facility in operation.

Ericsson's ultra scalable, highly reliable IP backbone routers have allowed Cable & Wireless HKT to dramatically increase the capacity of their existing network and accommodate the rapid increase of Internet users in the region.

"We chose Ericsson for the carrier-class capacity and superior performance the AXI 520 brings to our data backbone network, as well as their unique ability to provide a full range of local integration and support services," said Cheng Ka Hang, Executive Vice President, Technology & New Venture Management, Cable & Wireless HKT. "All of these are key factors, critical to helping us meet the current and future demands of Asia's rapid Internet growth."

"We are very excited about our AXI 520 being chosen by Cable & Wireless HKT," said Norman Chan, General Manager, Fixed and Cellular Networks Division, Ericsson Hong Kong. "Winning this contract reinforces the fact that Ericsson today provides carrier-class backbone solutions and global services that can meet the exploding growth of Internet traffic now and in the future."

Ericsson's AXI 520 IP Backbone Routers provide Cable & Wireless HKT's Powerb@se data centers with wire-speed gigabit performance to connect customer servers to the Internet. With the deployment of these backbone routers, the provider's network system is now scalable to 40 Gbps per router and will be able to achieve a performance level of 40 Mpps (million packets per second).

About Ericsson's AXI IP Backbone Routers

Ericsson's AXI 520 and AXI 580 IP backbone routers are based on Juniper technology. Ericsson adds significant network management capabilities to the platforms as well as worldwide integration and support services.

Ericsson's relationship with Juniper began in 1997 with an initial equity investment. In March 1999, Ericsson announced an increased investment and a series of strategic agreements, including a co-operative technology agreement.

About Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network

Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network (PBN) is an Internet-class, carrier-class data backbone and a key component to both wireless and wireline operators' transitions to next generation networks. PBN enables operators to offer new or expanded services over an IP infrastructure in an extremely reliable and ultra-scalable configuration. PBN is based on the following hardware platforms from Ericsson: the AXI 580 and AXI 520 IP backbone routers, AXI 540 Edge Aggregation Router and AXD 301 High-Performance ATM Switch.

PBN includes a Multiservice Management Suite (MMS) of products that includes in-house developed tools optimized for next generation networks and tools from best-in-class partners to address management issues in four key areas: network provisioning, service provisioning, service and network assurance, customer care and billing.

PBN also employs Ericsson's innovative range of robust DWDM optical networking products: ERIcsson Optical Networking (ERION).
