NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2000
Leading Provider of Software for Live Voice communications Via the
Internet Chooses IBM RS/6000 M80's to become First to
Offer Instant Voice Conferencing for up to 1000 Users
Paltalk today announced it has selected ultra-powerful IBM Unix Servers to help expand the company's instant voice conferencing capabilities. The new RS/6000 M80 servers will enable Paltalk to become the first company to offer instant voice conference for up to 1000 people simultaneously. The company said the decision to switch to a Unix based server is a direct result of its substantial user growth.
Paltalk, one of the fastest growing providers of software for live voice and video communications over the Internet, was established in June of 1998. Since its inception the company has grown to a user base of over 2.3 million with 250,000 using the service daily.
"Paltalk remains committed to providing users with the best voice quality on the Internet," said Perry Scherer, chief technical officer at Paltalk. " After competitive testing, we found that the IBM RS/6000 M80 server provided the fastest response time and offered the best support for our Java based server applications. When you have over 1000 chat rooms in operation at one time with 10,000 simultaneous users, you need the power that IBM's M80 can provide."
The two to eight-way, rack-mounted IBM RS/6000 M80 system offers breakthrough copper microprocessor technology and is bolstered by mainframe-class reliability and serviceability. Smaller, denser, faster and cooler than their aluminum counterparts, copper chips are also more reliable and less expensive to manufacture. IBM's line of UNIX servers is the industry's first to be completely powered by copper.
"Rapidly growing Internet companies like Paltalk rely on the scalability and high availability from their hardware infrastructure," said Mike Kerr, vice president of products IBM Web server unit. "IBM's work with Paltalk and the installation of the M80's will help assure that Paltalk customers receive state-of-the-art instant voice conferencing. We are excited to be deploying IBM servers in a fast growing ebusiness like Paltalk."
