NetWorker 6.0.1 Delivers Powerful NDMP Backup Solutions for EMC

Network Attached Storage

Legato Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:LGTO), a worldwide leader in enterprise storage management software, is joining forces with EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) to release Legato NetWorker(R) 6.0.1 with Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) support for EMC's CELERRA(R) and CLARiiON IP4700 family of network attached storage systems.

These products enable NetWorker to provide backup/restore support for EMC's enterprise class file servers and mid range class file servers respectively, by using a direct- or remotely-attached tape library or tape drive. NDMP support brings full flexibility to customers using Legato NetWorker to backup CELERRA or CLARiiON IP4700, code-named "Chameleon," by simplifying network data management, centralizing backup control, reducing network traffic, and enhancing backup performance.

"We're very excited about the opportunity to extend our strong relationship with EMC into the NAS market. These offerings will provide Legato and EMC customers with the opportunity to leverage our mutual strengths in data protection and availability," said David B. Wright, president and CEO of Legato Systems.

Legato and EMC are committed to consistently developing and implementing storage solutions that benefit their mutual customers. By combining their efforts to ensure that Legato NetWorker backup and recovery software is fully functional and operational on the CELERRA and CLARiiON IP4700, these NDMP qualifications will provide customers with the ability to select leading open backup and recovery technology to protect network-based storage.

Roy Sanford, Vice President, Enterprise Alliances at EMC, said, "EMC CELERRA is the most scalable, highest performing NAS solution available in the market today. Through our work with Legato, NetWorker with NDMP provides EMC CELERRA customers with a data protection solution that is able to support the highest levels of performance, scalability and availability."

Legato and EMC Leverage the Power of NDMP

Legato developed NDMP as an open standard protocol for enterprise-wide backup of heterogeneous network-attached storage. EMC was one the first to adopt open standards across all their storage offerings. Industry leaders have embraced NDMP as the standard infrastructure for backup of network attached storage. The power of NDMP lies in its capability to provide compatibility between any combination of NDMP-compliant network-attached servers, backup devices, and management applications. This significantly simplifies the data management process and enables plug-and-play interoperability. Legato and EMC are able to deliver an integrated storage and backup solution which is simple yet powerful by leveraging the benefits of NDMP.
