Newest Editions of InterScan VirusWall and eManager for Internationally Popular Red Hat, SuSE, And Turbo Linux Platforms Guard
Against Viruses, Trojans, Hacker Agents and Other Unwanted Content
Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq:TMIC), the leading provider of antivirus solutions for the Internet gateway, today announced its award-winning InterScan(R) VirusWall(R) gateway virus protection and content filtering solution for Red Hat, SuSE, and Turbo Linux, the most widely used versions of the Linux operating system used in North America, Germany, and Japan, respectively.
Expected to be available in Q1 '2001, InterScan VirusWall v.3.6, and its optional content filtering module InterScan eManager(TM) v3.6, designed to support Red Hat Linux (v6.1 and v6.2), SuSE Linux (v6.4 and v7.0), and Turbo Linux (v6.1J and v6.1) in addition to WindowsNT, Solaris, and HP-UX. With this announcement, Trend Micro supports enterprise-class virus protection and content filtering for the widest variety of platforms and for more flavors of Linux than any other antivirus vendor.
Based on Unix, Linux is considered a highly advanced, yet simple to use, open-source operating system, which can be used to operate networked or stand-alone servers and workstations. Originating nearly a decade ago, Linux has been embraced by developers around the world for its inherent robustness, graphical interface and customization features, and has given rise to several distributions, or "flavors". As the use of the Linux platform for handling enterprise Internet traffic has increased, however, so too has the need for Linux-based virus protection, especially since the majority of viruses and other malicious code now enter the network via the Internet.
Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall v3.6 for Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, and Turbo Linux will provide gateway level protection to the burgeoning community of open-source developers taking advantage of the Linux platform. By scanning and detecting viruses and malicious code traveling in HTTP, SMTP, and FTP traffic that arrive at the Internet gateway, InterScan VirusWall helps stop malware before it can spread to the desktop. In addition, InterScan eManager v3.6 for Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, and Turbo Linux provides content filtering and spam-blocking capabilities to the Linux-based enterprise. eManager can also be used to identify and block potentially harmful messages and file attachments during a virus crisis.
"The addition of the SuSE and Turbo Linux versions of InterScan VirusWall really stemmed from developers who wanted the same gateway-level protection Trend Micro was currently offering for other platforms, like Red Hat Linux," explained Oscar Chang, senior vice president of product development at Trend Micro. "Developers and technologists have always been an important part of our customer base, so we wanted to give something back to the open-source community."
According to International Data Consultants (IDC), Linux has become the second most popular server platform deployed to support Internet-related applications like email or web hosting. IDC estimates that shipments for the Linux operating environment will experience a compound annual growth rate of more than 28% by 2004.
