VERITAS(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the industry's leading enterprise-class application storage management software provider, today unveiled its revolutionary new data protection solution for workgroups in heterogeneous (UNIX and Windows NT) environments: VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer(TM). The first product of its kind to combine enterprise-class data protection features, ease-of-use and superior reliability at an affordable price point, VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer is the ideal backup and recovery solution for small-to-mid-size heterogeneous environments. Providing full control from a single, easy-to-navigate graphical user interface, VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer allows for policy-driven operation and detailed reporting and will scale as networks grow. When larger enterprise features are required, the new product also features an easy upgrade path to the datacenter-class VERITAS NetBackup(TM).
"With the growing number of remote offices and enterprise departments deploying heterogeneous networks, the data protection challenge for these environments has increased exponentially," said Fred van den Bosch, executive vice president, engineering, VERITAS Software. "By marrying advanced data protection features and high performance with a uniquely easy-to-use graphical user interface, VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer delivers a combination of value, flexibility and ease-of-use not typically found in UNIX-based solutions. It's truly a revolutionary solution for small-to-mid-size UNIX/heterogeneous installations and remote offices."
"For the UNIX/heterogeneous workgroup market, VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer provides value, ease-of-use and performance," said Philip Mendoza, analyst, International Data Corporation. "With the wizard-based functionality, it is intuitive and easy-to-use, and the shared memory technology, a key feature in VERITAS NetBackup, provides high-end performance."
Delivering unprecedented ease-of-use for its product class, VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer features an intuitive user platform from which various configuration wizards can be launched. The "Getting Started" wizard provides step-by-step help on product installation and setup. The "Configure Storage Devices and Media" wizard enables users to easily define tape libraries, tape drives and associated media. The "Configure Catalog Backup" wizard helps users to specify how and when configuration and catalog information is backed up. Finally, the "Create a Backup Policy" wizard ensures that users can easily define policies, including schedules for automated, unattended backup of data from a client system or a set of client systems.
VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer matches its ease-of-use with dynamically powerful data protection features and high performance. The new solution can support up to two tape drives per backup server or a maximum of one robotic tape library with up to two drives and up to 22 slots. With multiplexing support, VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer also exploits new advances in native tape drive transfer rates by enabling up to eight concurrent data streams to be written to a single tape device. This helps to optimize tape device usage and performance. It also features caching of backup data to shared memory, "buffering" date flow and ensuring continuous data transfers to tape devices.
VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer can protect up to four additional client systems through backup over the network and can be centrally managed along with other VERITAS NetBackup servers via the VERITAS Global Data Manager(TM). To protect vital database information, database agents are available for VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer to support leading database platforms, including Oracle, Informix, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server. The new data protection solution runs on Solaris, HP-UX and Windows NT platforms and supports a wide range of client system platforms, including most UNIX flavors, Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 95, Novell NetWare and Macintosh.
