Polls Now Open on Slashdot; Community Given the Power to Award
Over $100,000 and Propeller-Topped Beanies to Open Source Innovators
Andover.Net (NASDAQ:ANDN), the Internet's leading Linux destination, today announced nominees for the first-annual Slashdot Open Source Community Awards, also known as the Slashdot Beanie Awards. The awards, sponsored by Slashdot, the &uot;News for Nerds: Stuff that matters&uot; Website, enable members of the open source community to take the contest into their own hands. From January 3 through January 16, Slashdot founders Rob &uot;CmdrTaco&uot; Malda and Jeff &uot;Hemos&uot; Bates invited readers to come to the site and nominate leaders in the Open Source revolution. Now the votes have been tallied and only the most popular nominees have made the cut. Readers can begin voting for the finalists today at http://slashdot.org/vote.pl.
Slashdot readers will help Andover.Net and Slashdot award over $100,000 in cash prizes to important contributors and influential advocates in the Open Source community. Categories range from the serious $30,000 prize for Most Improved Open Source Project to the Propeller-Topped Beanie Prize for Best Dressed.
&uot;The Open Source community has produced some really great projects this year. Andover.Net's goal with the awards is to encourage development and support projects,&uot; said Bruce Twickler, president and CEO of Andover.Net. &uot;We look forward to recognizing the important contributors and celebrating them at one great Slashdot party.&uot;
Beginning today, polls will be open on Slashdot. Readers can log on to cast votes for favorite nominees in each category. In keeping with the open source philosophy, the voting process is extremely flexible--until voting closes on January 31, readers can change their selections as often as they would like.
The envelope please...
To honor winners, Andover.Net and Slashdot will be throwing a Beanie Bash on February 3 from 7 pm to 10 pm at the China Club located at 268 West 47th Street in New York City. Slashdot fans are invited to enjoy lots of food, free beer and tons of geeky fun. But there's only room for 1,200 people--so get there early and get a good seat. Winners will be announced in a live Webcast from the party. It'll be a Linux love-fest!
