Roger Oglesby Succeeds J.D. Alexander as Publisher and Editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer; Alexander Named Assistant to Hearst Newspapers President

Ken Bunting Promoted to Executive Editor of the Post-Intelligencer
Roger Oglesby has been named publisher and editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, succeeding J.D. Alexander, who has been named an assistant to George B. Irish, vice president of The Hearst Corporation and president of Hearst Newspapers. Additionally, Ken Bunting has been promoted to executive editor at the Post-Intelligencer. The announcements were made today by Frank A. Bennack, Jr., president and chief executive officer of The Hearst Corporation, and Irish.
Oglesby, 51, possesses a diverse background encompassing journalism, business and law; he holds a B.J. degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a J.D. degree from Hastings College of the Law at the University of California.
&uot;Roger brings to the Post-Intelligencer a broad background with impressive depth in both the business and editorial aspects of journalism,&uot; said Irish. &uot;We are confident that he will build on J.D.'s achievements at the helm of the Post-Intelligencer.&uot;
Irish added, &uot;His particular combination of abilities and experience will be important during this period of transition in the Seattle newspaper market, as the Seattle Times converts from an afternoon to a morning paper on March 6, 2000.&uot;
Alexander, 61, in his new capacity will provide a wide range of assistance to the Hearst newspaper group, including working with the editors of the twelve daily Hearst-owned newspapers. He is expected to use his extensive newsroom leadership experience to help Hearst editors and publishers in their ongoing efforts to strengthen their newspapers.

Under his stewardship, the paper won a Pulitzer Prize for the brilliant political cartoons of David Horsey. Now all the Hearst newspapers will have the benefit of his knowledge and experience.&uot;
Bunting, 51, was formerly managing editor, responsible for overseeing all news content of the newspaper. In his new position, Bunting will assume added responsibilities for new media and will serve on the newspaper's editorial board.
Oglesby was most recently president of the Orange County edition of the Los Angeles Times, a Times Mirror newspaper. Prior to this, he held a variety of positions with Times Mirror, including editor and vice president of the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call and president and chief executive officer, California Community News. He also previously held editorial positions with Knight-Ridder's San Jose Mercury News and the Omaha World-Herald.
Alexander joined the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as executive editor in 1986 and added the title of publisher in 1993. Previously, he had been managing editor of the San Diego Union, and prior to that occupied various positions at The Washington Post. He holds a B.A. degree from Wake Forest University.
Bunting joined the Post-Intelligencer in 1993 as managing editor. Previously, he held various positions including senior editor/news, deputy managing editor, and assistant managing editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. His journalistic background also includes positions at the Los Angeles Times, Sacramento Bee and Cincinnati Post. He holds a B.A. degree from Texas Christian University.
