ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 31, 2000

Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced the launch of a new network monitoring and management system designed to enhance performance and improve the service reliability of packet and Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks.

The new NetMinder(r) Systems' Packet Traffic Management (PTM) software offers network operators technically-advanced tools for near-real-time monitoring, measuring, analysis and display. Together with OneVision(r) Network Fault Management Release 10 also announced today (see separate release), Lucent now offers a powerful new combination of performance tools designed to significantly improve the reliability of today's complex packet-based networks.

In addition, network operators who provide voice services over data networks can also use the NetMinder System PTM along with other NetMinder System Feature Sets to provide advanced quality performance management for converged voice and data networks. The announcement was made at TeleStrategies OSS 2000, a operations support and management systems industry conference and exhibition.

&uot;Quality of service performance is a vital issue for operators of packet networks,&uot; said Rich Wetmore, executive director of the Network Performance Laboratory in Lucent's Bell Labs. &uot;The near-real-time capabilities of NetMinder PTM provide a powerful, reliable solution that can help network managers handle unanticipated traffic loads and optimize the performance of critical network assets.&uot;

Lucent's NetMinder System PTM proactively detects and manages performance events, such as network congestion and unexpectedly high packet volumes, before these events affect customers. The software system measures and monitors performance in both the core and access portions of packet networks, giving operators an up-to-date view of traffic from a holistic, network-wide perspective.

The NetMinder System PTM Feature Set collects data every five minutes and displays it, via a Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based Web browser, in tabular and two-dimensional map displays. The sophisticated software uses the latest advancements in data visualization to then graphically represent the state of the network.

To generate alerts for congestion and other network conditions, the NetMinder System PTM has flexible threshold capabilities determined by parameters set by the network operator. Alerts can be directed to e-mails or pagers in addition to the GUI display.

&uot;Lucent understands network operators need to manage packet-switched traffic over convergent networks,&uot; said Wetmore. &uot;The NetMinder System PTM Feature Set delivers a network monitoring and management system that directly and efficiently addresses this need.&uot;

The NetMinder System PTM Feature Set runs on a standard Microsoft Windows/NT server and provides users with on-line capabilities through web-enabled computers. Data storage resides in a database management system and can record up to eight days of periodic data and 32 days of alerts.

The first release of the NetMinder System PTM Feature Set will function with both Lucent Technologies and Cisco Systems(r) switches. Pricing varies with the network configuration.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components.
