RC5061 Reduces Board Space, Costs and Meets the Power

Requirements of Leading Edge Microprocessors

With the introduction of the RC5061, Fairchild Semiconductor International (NYSE: FCS) now offers designers the widest range of power supply solutions for next generation PC motherboard architectures. The newly released RC5061 is a combination DC:DC controller with two LDOs, providing a highly accurate programmable set of output voltages for multi-voltage platforms such as the Intel Camino. The RC5061 is also a complete solution for the Intel Whitney and other high-performance processors, including the new Coppermine chip set.

The RC5061 features one synchronous mode programmable DC:DC controller and two Low Dropout Regulators (LDOs) for the PC Motherboard. The on-board 5-bit D/A converter precisely matches the processor supply voltage from 1.3V to 3.5V through programming by the microprocessor. The on-board LDOs provide 1.5V and 2.5V fixed voltages for Vtt termination and Vclock. By combining a switcher and two separate LDOs or voltage regulators in a 20-lead SOIC, the RC5061 reduces both board space and costs.

The RC5061 also features remote voltage sensing, independently adjustable current limit and Active Droop for optimal converter transient response. The Fairchild Active Droop feature allows the device to meet Coppermine requirements by reducing the number of on board capacitors. The RC5061 also performs current sensing without requiring a precise costly resistor. With the reduction in capacitors and no sense resistors, the RC5061 should result in cost savings of as much as 40%.

Fairchild's family of power supply solutions, DC:DC converters, MOSFETs and LDOs include the RC5058 and RC5060 released in late October. Also included are the RC1116, RC1117, RC158 and RC431A. These devices provide designers with the most cost effective, space saving options to meet the power demands of leading edge microprocessors.

For PC platforms based on Whitney, Camino, VIA, SiS or ALI Chip Set, the RC5061 is a best in class product. It has secured several design wins with major PC manufacturers in the USA, Taiwan, Korea and Europe. The RC5061 is optimized for the Intel Pentium II and Intel Pentium III along with K6/7 microprocessor based PCs.
