NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 2000
In late June, a new wireless network called ArcTel was launched in Frankfurt, Germany. ArcTel is the offspring of a partnership between a unit of the giant Vodafone Airtouch (NYSE-VOD) called Mannesmann Arcor, which specializes in fixed-line telecommunications in Germany, and a competitive local exchange carrier, Teligent (Nasdaq-TGNT).
Teligent, headquartered in Vienna, Va., provides voice and high-speed data communications as well as broadband Internet access to small and medium-size businesses in 41 U.S. markets. . . But every silver lining has a cloud inside, right? Analysts are somewhat cautious about this stock, preferring competitors Nextlink Communications (Nasdaq-NXLK) and Winstar Communications (Nasdaq-WCII). Merrill Lynch rates Teligent Accumulate for the intermediate term, and buy for long-term investors.
Teligent closed on July 6 at $21.63. AT&T's (NYSE-T) Liberty Media (LMGA) owns 22% of the company, and Microsoft (Nasdaq-MSFT) holds around 14%.
