CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BW HealthWire)--July 17, 2000

Cynosure, Inc., a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of medical lasers, announced that its Apogee line of hair removal lasers received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for "permanent hair reduction."

Data collected from two clinical sites demonstrates an average hair reduction of 76-percent after 14.7 months post last laser treatment. These results follow three to five laser treatments. Follow-up visits showing continued hair removal were in the 14-month range. Physicians use this information to help patients set expectations at the beginning of treatment.

Suzanne Kilmer, M.D., Director of the Laser & Skin Surgery Center in Sacramento, Calif., said, "Our patients are delighted with the results we get with Cynosure's Apogee laser. The laser provides excellent hair reduction with minimal discomfort. The data from this study allows us to provide encouraging information about long-term results."

Dr. Jenifer Lloyd, Director of Laser Services for Lloyd Dermatology in Youngstown, Ohio, said, "We began using the Cynosure laser in 1997. Our patients are very satisfied with the long-term hair reduction we were able to achieve."

Cynosure's hair removal lasers include the recently-introduced Apogee 6200 and Apogee 9300. Each of these lasers includes Cynosure's pioneering technology called Thermokinetic Selectivity(TM), which facilitates treatment for patients of all skin types. This is particularly significant because of the fact that most laser hair removal systems cannot treat darker skin types, while the American population is increasingly comprised of people with darker skin.

The Apogee 6200 and Apogee 9300 helps physicians reduce treatment time during hair removal because of its larger spot sizes (10mm, 12.5mm, 15mm) and faster repetition. The Apogee 9300, designed primarily for larger practices and clinics dedicated to hair removal, is distinguished as the most powerful hair removal laser on the market, with repetition rates as high as 5 Hertz, offering greater coverage per square inch.

Cynosure develops, manufactures and markets laser technology for aesthetic treatment applications, including hair removal, leg veins, scar revision, port-wine birthmarks, facial spider veins, stretch marks, tattoos, pigmented lesions and advanced skin resurfacing. These products have given Cynosure worldwide recognition in the practices of dermatologists, plastic surgeons and vascular surgeons. Cynosure can be accessed at http://www.cynosurelaser.com.
