Creating the most interactive and inclusive Democratic Convention in history, the DNCC selected Akamai to deliver all of the live and on-demand broadcast feeds, including live interviews, "roving reporter" coverage, and video clips, from the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles (August 14 - 17), exclusively via Akamai's FreeFlowSM Streaming network. In addition, the DNCC will utilize Akamai's Interactive Media Services to enable geographically dispersed users to actively participate in its exclusive line-up of events. The DNCC will leverage various capabilities of Akamai's interactive media services including live multimedia coverage, presentation slides, and interactive messaging to give global end users the ability to privately pose questions to some of the Democratic Party's most influential leaders.
"At the first Democratic Convention of the 21st Century, we are excited to be partnering with many cutting-edge technology companies to bring live footage of the 2000 Democratic Convention into the homes of millions of Americans via the Internet," said DNCC CEO Lydia Camarillo. "Our party and this Convention both continue to be pioneers in creative technology which allows us to encourage participation in our party and Convention by all Americans worldwide this August."
Kicking off the e-Convention events, the DNCC will today conduct a virtual press conference from the DEMS2000.com web site. Members of the press community will be informed of the DNCC's e-Convention plans as well as the cutting-edge technology they have employed to create the DNCC's innovative Web site. As a result of the streaming technology that the DNCC is utilizing from Akamai, press attendees will be able to communicate and interact with the DNCC's CEO Lydia Camarillo and Chairman Terry McAuliffe as well as the technology leaders behind the Web site. The virtual press conference is the first of several live webcasts that Akamai will provide for the DNCC throughout the e-Convention.
"We are honored to have been selected by the DNCC to be part of a first-ever breakthrough political initiative," said Sanjay Srivastava, Akamai's vice president of enterprise services. "The e-Convention represents an excellent use of our interactive media services that will give end users a private, front row seat to the biggest politicians in the Democratic Party. We are excited to showcase our technology and expertise during one of the Web's most historical events ever." Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service is built upon the Company's EdgeAdvantageTM platform that uses sophisticated algorithms to monitor the Internet on a real-time basis, understand the location of the requesting user, and make intelligent decisions about the best and most efficient Akamai edge server from which to deliver content to the end user. The FreeFlow Streaming service incorporates Akamai's proprietary SteadyStreamSM technology that sends multiple copies of the same stream to the edges of the Internet and then recombines the streams into the original high-quality format. The FreeFlow Streaming service will deliver the e-Convention feeds in all standard formats including Apple QuickTime, Microsoft's Windows Media Player, and RealNetworks RealSystem G2.
Akamai's interactive media services offer a rich set of features that enable content providers to effectively deliver content and interact with small or large audiences on the Web including live audio and video, presentation content options, audience polling, moderated messaging, data archiving, on-demand access and reporting.
