Caldera Systems Inc., (Nasdaq: CALD), a "Linux for eBusiness" leader and the first Linux solutions company to license Java, Tuesday announced the availability of the Linux 2.4 Technology Developer Release Preview.
This developer's preview enables early software development with a beta version of the new Linux 2.4 kernel, Sun Microsystems' Java HotSpot(TM) technology and glibc 2.1.91.
"Based upon the foundational efforts of Blackdown.org, Sun and Caldera have worked hard to provide the most current Java technology to the Linux community, and we're pleased that Caldera will make a beta version of the Java 2 platform, version 1.3 available to developers," said Gina Centoni, director of product marketing, Software Systems Group, Sun Microsystems.
"With the 2.4 Technology Preview, Caldera underscores its leadership as the first Linux for business company to license Java technology and the first to provide those tools to developers for the next generation of 2.4-based Linux solutions."
"With the release of Linux 2.4 Technology Preview, Caldera is positioning itself to be the leading supplier of development tools for Linux-based eBusiness solutions," said Bill Claybrook, research director for Linux and Open Source Software, Aberdeen Group.
"This release will give ISVs the tools they require to make their eBusiness applications available on Linux."
Caldera's Linux 2.4 Technology Preview includes:
-- Preview of Linux 2.4 kernel technology
-- Beta preview of Java 2 platform for Linux, version 1.3
-- Java HotSpot Client and Server Virtual Machines
-- glibc 2.1.91: (2.2 beta)
-- Latest C/C Linux development tools
-- KDE 2.0 Development Snapshot
-- Improved USB support
-- PHP3 and PHP4 for rapid development of dynamic Web sites
"It's been our goal to give developers and ISVs the necessary tools to begin developing to the latest Linux and Java technologies," said Darren Davis, engineering vice president, Caldera Systems Inc.
"Now applications that businesses depend on can be made available more readily when the new Linux and Java platforms are fully released. With over 30% of the Internet running on Linux today, it only makes sense to give them the tools they need for the next generation of Linux-based business solutions."
The Linux 2.4 Technology Preview positions Caldera as a leader in open standard services and components that leverage the Linux platform for the most ideal distributed, manageable, and low cost/high performance business solutions.
