ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 2000

Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE:MOT) Network Solutions Sector (NSS) announced today it has been awarded a $170 million contract from Japanese cellular operator TU-KA Cellular Tokyo Inc. to expand the existing personal digital cellular (PDC) system in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

The expansion is composed of four phases. A contract for the phase 1 cell site expansion, signed in April, was for $17 million. This recent contract award covers the final three phases and involves more than 500 cell sites. The value of the contracts cover both installation and SC(TM)4810 and SC2410 base stations, SC410 microcells and base site controllers. Motorola NSS has already begun equipment deployment.

Network commercial service will become operational by April 2001 in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. The original PDC system, based on Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology, was supplied by Motorola in 1994. Motorola pioneered the SC architecture in Japan to support the Japanese PDC standard. The SC architecture was later evolved to support other technologies, such as Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).

"With the rapid increasing demand for voice and data capability, this particular expansion will provide further improvement of the network's service quality,"said Hiroshi Fukumuro, Managing Director General Manager Technology & Engineering Div., TU-KA Cellular Tokyo Inc.

"This network expansion will enhance the quality of communication by increasing the availability and capacity of the network. We are delighted that TU-KA is continuing its relationship with us to take their networks into the future," said Shinji Ogura, General Manager of NSS operations in Japan.
