MONTE CARLO, Monaco--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2000

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND), a leading provider of mobile data management and short-range wireless connectivity solutions, announced today that it has begun shipping Version 1.1 of XTNDAccess(TM) Blue SDK, a multi-purpose software development kit (SDK) for implementing Bluetooth(TM) wireless protocols in handheld devices.

Extended Systems will demonstrate the software at Bluetooth Congress 2000 in Monte Carlo, June 13-16, Stand 13.

1.1 Supports Cordless Telephony, Headset and Intercom

XTNDAccess Blue SDK is a portable software development kit designed for use in embedded devices such as cellular phones, PDAs, portable office equipment, digital cameras, medical equipment, and industrial automation products. Version 1.1 provides manufacturers support for all nine Bluetooth user profiles including Object Push, File Transfer, Synchronization, Dial-up Networking, LAN Access, FAX, Cordless Telephony, Headset and Intercom.

Cordless Telephony is Bluetooth's version of a cordless phone. It links to a companion base station within range or can revert to a cellular link when straying outside the range of its base. Headset technology allows the user to make wireless connections between an earpiece and a handset phone for hands free applications. Intercom enables room-to-room wireless networks to be set up for voice/audio transmissions.

Extended Systems' embedded protocol stack benefits OEMs by reducing development costs, shortening time-to-market, and providing strict compliance to Bluetooth's interoperability standards. The software stack works independent of a processor or operating system (OS), so manufacturers who are developing a product simply port the stack to their preferred OS and the host controller interface (HCI) of a Bluetooth-enabled radio and baseband module. Extended Systems' kit features a multi-transport OBEX module, so manufacturers can develop products that support wireless or wired transports -- including Bluetooth, IrDA infrared and serial -- within the same device. Version 1.1 ships with USB HCI transport and serial drivers for Bluetooth-compliant radios, and includes sample applications and complete documentation.

To date, Extended Systems has licensed its Bluetooth technology to 3Com, Motorola, and Fujitsu for implementation in next-generation products. And, many more companies are moving to use the company's software stack to develop products that will be introduced later this year.

"XTNDAccess Blue is an ideal choice for customers who are implementing Bluetooth in embedded devices," said David Hytha, vice president of Bluetooth Products, Silicon Wave. "With enhanced support for telecommunications and networking applications from Extended Systems, Silicon Wave customers can build complete software and hardware solutions for Bluetooth products today."

"Our early work with Extended Systems will enable us to be first-to-market with products that support industrial and commercial applications for Bluetooth," said Rudy Mui, vice president of marketing, Crossbow Technology, Inc., a leader in intelligent solid state sensor solutions.

About Bluetooth

The Bluetooth(TM) wireless technology is set to transform the personal connectivity market by providing freedom from wired connections. It is a specification for a small-form factor, low-cost radio solution providing links between PCs, mobile phones, other portable devices. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), comprised of leaders in the telecommunications, computing, and network industries, is driving development of the technology. The Bluetooth SIG includes promoter companies: 3Com, Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Lucent, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, and Toshiba, and over 1800 adopter companies.
