Version 3.4 of VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter Enhances HP-UX and
Oracle Offerings, Adds Windows 2000 Support
VERITAS(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTS), the data availability company(SM), today introduced version 3.4 of VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter(TM), bringing more advanced backup and recovery capabilities to this enterprise data protection solution and greatly expanding support for major operating systems and applications. The new version also more-closely integrates VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter, designed for protecting terabytes of data in the largest and most demanding enterprise and data center environments, with VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer(TM) (see related announcement dated today/1), the Company's powerful, yet cost-effective data protection solution for UNIX and Windows NT/2000 workgroups and remote sites. A common code base and new licensing structure provide a smooth migration path, making it easy for organizations to scale their storage management infrastructure to any sized environment.
"Companies building or expanding their data centers and global enterprise networks need powerful, yet flexible backup and recovery solutions that allow 24 x forever(SM) access to mission-critical information without compromising network performance or application availability," said John Maxwell, senior director, Data Protection Product Group, VERITAS Software. "VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter, the new name for our flagship data protection offering, answers those needs by delivering innovative backup and recovery technology to a wider range of operating system and database platforms."
Support for Windows 2000 and Other Leading Operating System
Platforms
VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter further expands support for major operating systems, reinforcing VERITAS NetBackup's position as the ideal choice for heterogeneous environments. The new enterprise-class product now integrates complete Windows 2000 server and client support with existing Windows NT compatibility. It also incorporates Microsoft Cluster Server protection and failover capabilities, and introduces client compression for Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments to reduce network traffic overhead. In addition to its Windows 2000 enhancements, VERITAS NetBackup has further expanded server and client support for other leading operating systems and platforms, most notably Solaris 8 and Sun PC Netlink, allowing VERITAS NetBackup to support virtually every popular computing platform, including UNIX derivatives, Windows environments, NetWare, Macintosh, Linux and many others.
VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter Brings FlashBackup(TM) to HP-UX
VERITAS Software has expanded its exclusive FlashBackup snapshot technology to support the HP-UX operating system platform. Previously only available on VERITAS NetBackup for Solaris, this unique VERITAS Software innovation provides a consistent, point-in-time backup of active servers without impacting online applications. This addresses the needs of today's 24 x forever enterprise environments where backup windows simply do not exist. The FlashBackup option provides a cost-effective alternative to hardware-based snapshot or split-mirror backup solutions because it does not require significant additional disk capacity, and it performs at the file level instead of the volume level. This advanced backup capability, combined with block-level data movement, greatly accelerates backup and recovery times without sacrificing the ability to restore individual files or reducing the availability of production systems.
Advanced BLI Agent Speeds Backup and Recovery of Oracle Databases
VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter supports online, snapshot backup of Oracle databases via the VERITAS NetBackup for Oracle - Advanced BLI Agent. This solution now fully integrates with both Oracle RMAN and the Storage Checkpoint technology of VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle to reduce backup windows to mere seconds, while optimizing database, system and network performance by backing up only changed data blocks of Oracle databases. These changed data blocks are tracked by the VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle storage checkpoint. Previously, database administrators had to choose from expensive hardware-based solutions that required a dedicated set of disk volumes to mirror the database for backup. Now, with the new VERITAS NetBackup for Oracle - Advanced BLI Agent, administrators can implement a backup solution that does not impact the Oracle database or instance, providing a true non-disruptive backup. This capability is now available on both the Solaris and HP-UX operating system platforms.
"VERITAS Software is bringing important new data protection technologies to the HP-UX 11 and 11i operating system, greatly improving backup and recovery performance and flexibility through FlashBackup and with Oracle databases through the Advanced BLI Agent," said Ram Appalaraju, director of marketing, E-Services Operating Environment, Hewlett-Packard Company. "We welcome these new capabilities and VERITAS Software's commitment to the HP-UX operating system platform."
