LEAGUE CITY, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 27, 2000
Eagle Wireless International (AMEX:EAG), together with Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD), is debuting Eagle's latest Convergent Set-Top Box, the Webflyer 550, during PC-EXPO 2000 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (AMD Booth #4245) in New York City, June 27 - 29, 2000. The new Webflyer 550, the fourth model in the company's Webflyer series, has been specifically configured to demonstrate its DVD-quality streaming video capabilities. These capabilities enable service companies such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and digital cable providers to deliver video-on-demand to an end user's television set. AMD's 550-MHz K6-2 processor powers Eagle's Convergent Set-Top Box and allows the Webflyer 550 to stream video, play DVDs and operate 3D games all in one device.
Eagle's Webflyer 550 streams MPEG4 video through broadband DSL systems, digital cable systems and Ethernet networks. Service providers will be able to provide true video-on-demand content at the user's request, similar to other pay-per-view-services. The advantage of video-on-demand is that end users will be able to view programs whenever they choose rather than waiting for them to be scheduled.
Eagle's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. H. Dean Cubley, was quoted as saying, "Eagle is excited about introducing this new convergence technology at PC-Expo 2000 and to be working with a world-class company like AMD on new Internet applications such as video-on-demand. The combination of AMD's K6-2 technology with our Convergent Set-Top Box has created a powerful new multimedia device for the living room television that accommodates either cable or broadband Internet. As the Internet continues to increase in bandwidth, streaming video services for entertainment, education and business applications will also increase." Dr. Cubley further stated that Eagle's Webflyer 550 can connect to existing home networks and serve as a gateway to the home for broadband Internet networks. This is an important feature since all "Smart Homes" are very likely to be equipped with this type of device in the future.
The streaming video quality is comparable to DVD video content and can be scaled back if your Internet or cable connection can't handle the bandwidth. The Webflyer 550 uses Microsoft's Media Player technology to stream the video from the ISP or cable provider to the Webflyer 550, giving service providers flexibility in the type of services to be offered. The Webflyer 550 is scaleable in its design and can be configured with or without a DVD player. The Webflyer 550 is also easily interfaced with a DSL modem or cable modem for broadband Internet access.
