SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2000
Quantum Corporation's DLT and Storage Systems Group's (NYSE:DSS) Snap Division continues to extend its leadership position in the network attached storage (NAS) market with the announcement of three new Snap Servers today. The Snap Server 1000 series of products features two new models with capacities of 15 GB and 30 GB, with U.S. list prices of $499 and $799 respectively. The Snap Server 2000 series adds a new capacity of 60 GB with a list price of $1,699. The new Snap Servers offer as much as 50 percent more storage capacity than models they replace which include the Snap Server 1000 10 GB ($499) and Snap Server 2000 20 GB ($899). In addition, the Snap Server 4000 will continue to provide 120 GB of storage and RAID 5 in a rack-mountable form factor for $2,999.
"With the announcement of the new Snap Servers, it is clear that Quantum has improved its product line in a continued effort to grow in the hard drive-based NAS market projected to reach $8.3 billion in 2004," said Pu Xiang, senior analyst for server appliances at Dataquest. "As the 1999 market share leader for units shipped in the NAS space, Quantum is positioned to certainly benefit from the tremendous growth we forecast."
Snap Server 1000
The Snap Server 1000 15 GB maintains a sub-$500 price tag and small form factor. Quantum adds another model to the sub-$1000 category with the addition of the Snap Server 1000 30 GB. The three-and-one-half pound unit has proven to be ideal for use as a portable file server between locations, connecting easily from one network to another. In addition to file sharing, it is used for personal storage on a network, backup and movement of information to and from service bureaus, and for software downloads or upgrades.
Snap Server 2000
The Snap Server 2000 is optimized for the workgroup setting and supports RAID levels 0 and 1 for customers requiring enhanced performance or data protection for critical tasks. Some of its many uses include file serving, desktop and laptop backup, software downloads, and upgrades. The new 60 GB model offers 50 percent more storage than its predecessor.
"Quantum's strategy of offering file servers with superior performance and low total cost of ownership continues with our next generation of Snap Servers," said Sara Spivey, vice president of marketing for Quantum's Snap Division. "Our customers now enjoy higher capacities and lower cost per gigabyte, as well as the simplicity and reliability inherent in the Snap Server."
Capable of supporting all major networking platforms including Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, and Novell clients, the Snap Server product line installs in under five minutes and offers simple configuration through a Web browser interface that allows the file servers to be managed from anywhere on the network. Security can be integrated within existing Microsoft NT Domain and an event-based e-mail notification of potential problems is available on all Snap Server models.
The ease of use and low cost of ownership of the Snap Server provide customers with an attractive alternative to traditional NT file servers for storage and file sharing needs. Priced at approximately one-third or less of the cost of a traditional NT-type server, the Snap Server offers comparable performance and can be installed in minutes without disruption to the existing network.
