SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2000

As part of its drive to step up initiatives to make Java(TM) technology more relevant for business-critical computing, Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced it will take a leadership role on the Enterprise Executive Committee (EC), which will oversee the Java Community Process (JCP). HP will work with other EC members and Sun to guide the future development of Java technology.

HP also announced best-in-industry Java performance results for Java 2 Standard Edition Version 1.2 on an HP system running the HP-UX(1) 11 operating environment. HP's scores for the industry-standard SPEC benchmarks -- Java Business Benchmark (SPECjbb2000) and SPECjvm98 -- surpass scores achieved on equivalent system configurations from Sun, IBM and Compaq. For two- and eight-way configurations, HP has achieved SPECjbb2000 scores of 11,834 and 40,192 ops/s respectively. Also, HP has the performance lead for SPECjvm98 with a score of 81.1. The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) has audited and posted the results at http://www.spec.org.

"Our customers and partners count on HP to provide the best deployment environment for Java technology-enabled business applications," said Linda Lawson, general manager of HP's Application Development Organization. "HP's performance, reliability and availability for Java continue to blaze past the competition."

Keeping pace with delivering the latest technologies to the marketplace, HP supports the newly released Java 2 JDK 1.3 and Version 1.2 of Java3D technologies. Beta software is available today and expected in production release this fall. HP expects to deliver its full Java offerings running on Itanium-based systems with the HP-UX operating environment this fall. As a co-developer of the IA-64 architecture, HP is in a unique position to exploit the performance of the Itanium processor.

Additionally, HP is providing new value-add tools, including HPJMeter (performance analysis tool for business-critical Java applications) and HPJConfig (wizard to help enable optimal HP-UX performance for Java). These tools are available immediately for free download at http://www.hp.com/go/java.> About HP
