Tailored for Power Supplies, New Family Reduces Board Space and
Component Count While Increasing System Reliability and Efficiency
Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq:ISIL) today introduced the newest devices in its family of switch mode power supply (SMPS) series IGBTs to address the 24 X 7 power management demands of today's Internet infrastructure. The advanced SMPS 600V family of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) is tailored for the high current power densities and high frequency switching requirements of power supplies and telecom switches that comprise the backbone of today's Internet.

Intersil's SMPS IGBT devices are MOS gated, high voltage switching devices combining the best features of MOSFETs and bipolar transistors. The devices deliver the high input impedance of a MOSFET and the low on state conduction loss of a bipolar transistor. The family is designed for high voltage switching applications where high operating frequencies and low switching/conduction losses are essential, including AC/DC switch mode power supplies, high voltage DC/DC, power factor correction (PFC) stages and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
Intersil's SMPS family IGBT devices function as alternatives to power MOSFETs in high frequency, switch mode power converters. The devices deliver lower gate charge in comparison with MOSFETs, lowering peak current drive requirements. A single SMPS IGBT from Intersil can replace as many as three high voltage MOSFETs. Up to one-fifth the size of a comparable MOSFET solution, an SMPS IGBT solution reduces board space and component count. When employing Intersil's 600V SMPS IGBTs, designers can improve system reliability and efficiency while reducing costs.
With the addition of four new devices, Intersil's 600V SMPS IGBT family is now complete. The latest products include a device capable of switching 40 amps at 100kHz. For more information on Intersil's SMPS family, please visit the company's website at www.intersil.com/igbt.
