NEW YORK/MUNICH, Germany--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--March 27, 2000
Steel Pulse, one of the world's most outspoken and timeless reggae acts, has signed a deal with online global entertainment provider MCY.com (NASDAQ-OTC: MCYC) to exclusively webcast footage from the sold-out Steel Pulse 2000 American concert tour.
Fans of the UK's only Grammy-winning reggae band, which has rocked against racism, social injustice and environmental destruction for over two decades, will be able to view the webcast and purchase three pre-selected live tracks from the tour as digital downloads from MCY.com. The webcast package is scheduled to launch in May.
"Steel Pulse's unique sound, fusing roots reggae, R&B, funk, Britpop and jungle influences, has won them the respect of the music community since their debut album, Handsworth Revolution, rocked the British music scene in 1978," states Bernhard Fritsch, CEO and founder of MCY.com. "We look forward to bringing the magic of the Steel Pulse concert to the Internet and to their legions of fans around the world."
Steel Pulse was formed in the mid-1970s in Handsworth, Birmingham, as the British punk scene flourished and racial tensions gave rise to the "Rock Against Racism" movement. The nine-piece band's reggae and pop influences and incisive, socially critical lyrics rapidly earned it a following, while their political activism made them unlikely allies of the punk scene. In 1986, Steel Pulse won a Grammy for the album Babylon the Bandit, and they have been nominated for four additional Grammy awards, most recently this year. They are also the only reggae band to perform during Presidential inaugural festivities after an invitation by President Clinton in 1993.
"We are excited about our partnership with MCY.com because the company is at the forefront of the digital entertainment revolution and Steel Pulse prides itself on having always been cutting-edge" says David Hinds, lead singer and founding member of Steel Pulse. "Using the Internet to offer our fans across the globe otherwise unobtainable concert footage is something we feel very good about."
Steel Pulse's latest and 15th album, "Living Legacy," was released in 1999 and includes 12 Steel Pulse classics as well as "Livications" (dedications celebrating "life") to New York police brutality victims Amadou Diallo and Abner Louima. "Living Legacy" is also the first released on Tuff Gong Records, the label founded by Bob Marley, finally bringing to fruition Marley's desire to sign the band with Tuff Gong. The album was recorded live in Paris, Amsterdam and Puerto Rico.
MCY.com is a global Internet music company offering a dynamic variety of music and entertainment. MCY.com is currently webcasting a concert by the pop sensation Backstreet Boys and in mid-2000 will be premiering the much-anticipated performance of Pete Townshend's "Lifehouse" rock musical from London's legendary Sadler's Wells.
