IDC's SuperFlex SR2001A Plays Key Role in
Demonstration of Hybrid Satellite and Terrestrial Internet
Delivery Network At NAB Show

(IDC) announced that its new SuperFlex SR2001A satellite receiver was used by CyberStar, a Loral company and a leading provider of satellite and broadband data services, and Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media and applications, to successfully demonstrate live broadcast-quality Internet streaming over a hybrid satellite and terrestrial network. The demonstration took place at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas last month.

This live streaming demonstration showed for the first time that video streams can be delivered seamlessly from terrestrial-to-satellite networks with performance monitoring. Using Akamai's FreeFlowSM Streaming service, the 1 Megabit/second streams were delivered with unmatched quality and reliability across Akamai's globally distributed network and displayed in Akamai's booth at the show.
CyberStar played a crucial role in the demonstration by providing the satellite-based IP multicast service that transported the streams. CyberStar's global IP multicast network uses the latest Frame Relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) technologies to provide traditional network and Internet applications and support IP multicast communications services. The network spans the earth, with strategically positioned gateway teleports on both coasts of the United States and in Europe, and access through them to Loral Global Alliance and other satellites reaching the Americas, Europe and Asia. CyberStar's services and technologies facilitate the distribution of streaming media content to its global ISP customer base located on four continents and in 34 countries, enables TV-quality video streaming to be sent directly to desktops, and enhances performance by bypassing congested points on the Internet. CyberStar has implemented IDC's SuperFlex data transmission system as an integral part of their DVB infrastructure.
SuperFlex is a highly flexible digital satellite networking system designed to distribute Internet services, multimedia data, streaming media, audio and video by satellite in point-to-multipoint applications. The system incorporates advanced technology using Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Internet Protocol (IP), SNMP, IGMP and MPEG international standards. SuperFlex was voted the "Most Innovative Data Solution" of 1999 in the annual readers' poll conducted by Satellite Communications magazine. The SuperFlex SR2001A DVB satellite receiver provides data rate agility from 2 Ms/s to 45 Ms/s allowing for full transponder bandwidths, is DVB transport format compatible up to 78.75 Mb/s, provides Async, Sync, Ethernet (10/100base-T) outputs, has two Conditional Access (CA) Common Interface (CI) slots and two additional option slots.
