Approximately 2,000 Internet Users Speak: Free Instant Messaging -IM- Now; iCast and Tribal Voice to Send Evidence of Consumer Support for Open Communications to FCC

WOBURN, Mass. and DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2000

Today, iCAST, an online entertainment company, and Tribal Voice(TM), a leading provider of co-branded instant messaging and interactive communication solutions, will send approximately 2,000 consumer petitions to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) demanding that AOL make its AIM instant messaging service open and interoperable with products from other companies. These petitions call on AOL to open its instant messaging system and allow open communication for all users.

"These petitions speak to the heart of this issue: consumers want the freedom to choose instant messaging products and are demanding interoperability of services. Allowing AOL to merge with Time Warner without ensuring open communications will serve as a green light for the company to continue building walls on the Internet," said Margaret Heffernan, CEO, iCAST.

"Instant messaging will go as far as innovation can carry it," said Ross Bagully, CEO, Tribal Voice. "If AOL does not open its doors to interoperability, it will be a very short trip."

Both iCAST and Tribal Voice are active supporters of open access in instant messaging and strive for universal interoperability and consumer choice. iCAST's iCASTER and Tribal Voice's PowWow software are designed to be interoperable with AIM but AOL has continually taken steps to block such interoperability.
