SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2000
Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet communications, commerce and media company, today announced a new virus scan feature for Yahoo!(R)Mail (http://mail.yahoo.com), one of the Internet's most popular Web-based mail services. The new feature offers Yahoo! Mail users a fast, free and effective anti-virus tool to protect people from known viruses sent and received via e-mail file attachments.

The new virus scan feature, which is seamlessly integrated into Yahoo! Mail, automatically scans all outgoing e-mail file attachments such as documents, spreadsheets, zip files, presentations, executable files, and others using Symantec Corp.'s (Nasdaq:SYMC) award-winning anti-virus technology. People can also choose to scan incoming e-mail file attachments. For example, Yahoo! Mail users who receive file attachments from friends, family or business associates can now elect to have those attachments scanned, helping protect them from receiving and spreading e-mail borne viruses. If a virus is found during the quick and easy scanning process, the file will be cleaned, if possible, and the user will then have the opportunity to send an e-mail to the sender of the infected e-mail attachment to notify the sender that he or she sent a virus-infected file.
"Incorporating virus scan functionality into Yahoo! Mail is a logical next step in providing our millions of users with the safest, most secure and easiest-to-use e-mail service around," said Lisa Pollock, senior producer, Yahoo! Inc. "We expect our new virus scan feature to offer our users an even safer way to send and receive e-mail and help protect them against the effects of e-mail borne viruses."
Yahoo! Mail users who would like additional virus protection covering their entire PC or Macintosh system also have the opportunity to purchase from a full suite of Norton AntiVirus products in Symantec's online store, accessible via Yahoo! Shopping (http://shopping.yahoo.com), the Web's one-stop shopping destination for finding, comparing and buying just about anything.
Yahoo! Mail Continues to Put Spam in its Place
Free of charge, Yahoo! Mail's virus scan feature is the latest in a series of efforts undertaken by Yahoo! to continually provide valuable features for its millions of users. Yahoo! launched Spamguard(TM) for Yahoo! Mail in December 1999. Extremely well received by Yahoo! Mail users, Spamguard is a tool that has significantly reduced the intrusion of unsolicited commercial e-mail, commonly known as spam, into Yahoo! Mail users' inboxes. Using innovative technology developed at Yahoo!, Spamguard automatically detects spam and directs it to a separate "bulk mail" folder. Yahoo! Mail was the first major, free Web-based e-mail provider to offer people this mail management tool.
Yahoo! Mail To Go
Yahoo! Mail also is available for people using Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-enabled mobile phones and wireless devices based on the Palm Computing platform as well as palm-sized devices running WinCE. The wireless version of Yahoo! Mail further extends the company's Yahoo! Everywhere(TM) strategy to enable people to connect with each other and access Yahoo!'s Web-based content and powerful services through any Internet-connected device, making it easier to communicate with anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Delivering 3.6 billion messages on Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger in March 2000, Yahoo!'s global communications platform has scaled to become one of the largest in the world. Yahoo!'s comprehensive suite of communications services aim to give users everything they need to communicate and organize their lives in a centralized online location via the Web. From free e-mail, instant messaging, and voice chat to address books, calendars, and personal file storage, Yahoo!'s integrated services offer a wide range of options including the ability to send messages and alerts to and from wireless devices such as cell phones, pagers and personal digital assistants.
