NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--May 17, 2000
Having just seen his debut album certified double platinum by the RIAA as of May 15, 2000, Latin-pop superstar Marc Anthony has announced the dates for the summer leg of his North American tour beginning June 12 in Sacramento, California, and winding up July 29 in Miami, Florida (see itinerary following). The first leg of Marc's tour was SRO from coast-to-coast, with shows consistently drawing thousands of enthusiastic fans and rave reviews from the press.
Marc Anthony's Winter Tour 2000 ran from February 4 through March 21 and was the singer's first since the release of Marc Anthony, his Columbia Records debut album. Released on September 28, 1999, Marc Anthony debuted at No.8 on the Billboard 200 Album chart and was certified RIAA platinum some six weeks later. As of May 7, 2000, some seven months after its release, the album is still resting comfortably in the Top 40, having more than two million copies in the U.S. alone.
The initial success of Marc Anthony was driven, in part, by the irresistible groove of "I Need To Know," the album's first single. The RIAA-certified gold track spent eleven weeks in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, an additional eight weeks in the Top 40, and another two months on the chart. The song earned Marc a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Dimelo," the Spanish language version of "I Need To Know," hit the No.1 slot on the Hot Latin Tracks chart.
One of Marc's electrifying live performances was lensed for an exclusive HBO special, "Marc Anthony: The Concert From Madison Square Garden," which debuted on Valentine's Day 2000. The special was produced and directed for Cream Cheese Productions by Marty Callner, whose previous HBO credits include specials starring Madonna, Garth Brooks, and Jerry Seinfeld. The special showcased Marc's English language hits, along with smash tunes from the Spanish language salsa albums which established him as the world's top-selling salsa singer.
Marc Anthony has been awarded six gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA: his albums Contra La Corriente, Todo A Su Tiempo, and Marc Anthony have all turned gold; Marc Anthony has achieved double platinum status; "I Need To Know" has been certified gold. Marc's album Contra La Corriente was awarded the Best Tropical Latin Performance Grammy at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in 1998. His latest salsa release, Desde Un Principio -- From The Beginning (Sony Discos), held the No.1 slot on the Billboard Latin 50 for seven weeks and was, according to SoundScan, the No.1 album on the Latin Album Sales chart.
Marc Anthony has been hailed as the "reigning king of salsa" by The New York Times, which praised his "flawless singing" while calling him "somebody who could compete with the great pop figures of the century."
A talented actor as well as singer, Marc Anthony appeared as Noel, a deranged street person, in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed film "Bringing Out The Dead." He previously appeared in the 1996 films "Big Night" and "The Substitute." Marc Anthony starred on Broadway in the Paul Simon musical "The Capeman."
