CAMPINAS, Brazil--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2000
The New Network Will Enable Brazil's Largest Wireless Operator
to Move Toward Voice and Data Convergence and
Third Generation (3G) Services
Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that it was selected by Telesp Celular, Brazil's largest wireless operator with more than 3.2 million subscribers, to provide a centrally-managed, optical network based on Lucent's synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) technology. The new network will allow Telesp Cellular, which is owned by Portugal Telecom, to expand its traffic capacity with higher speeds, enabling the transmission of voice, data and video to facilitate third generation (3G) services.
The project consists of the implementation of five optical rings to connect all of the operator's mobile switching centers, forming an optical backbone in Sao Paulo. This backbone will, in turn, be connected to the coast (Santos and Praia Grande), the Vale do Paraiba, and Campinas. The network installation is expected to be completed by September.
"We're very excited to, once again, be bringing new technologies to Telesp Celular, demonstrating that we are committed to the evolution of their network," said Renato Furtado, president of Lucent Technologies Brazil.
"The advantage of Lucent's optical technology is its highly adaptable network architecture and ease of network management, which helps reduce our operational and maintenance costs," said Gilson Rondinelli, business development director of Telesp Celular.
Telesp's optical network will include Lucent's WaveStar(TM) ADM 16/1 and DACS(R) II Access Cross-connect (AX) 4 and 11. The ADM 16/1 is an SDH system that can transmit voice, data and video across optical rings at speeds up to 2.5 gigabits per second (Gb/s). That's the equivalent of transmitting approximately 75 encyclopedia volumes each second. The DACS II AX 4 and11 are flexible, scalable compact 3/1/0 digital cross-connects that also offer integrated access functionality providing service providers with efficient voice and data transmission over private and public networks worldwide. In addition to these systems, Telesp Celular will deploy Lucent's sophisticated network management systems, ITM-NM and ITM-SC, which allow for reliable and efficient management of the network from a central site.
