NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2000
OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV) (AEX:OPTV) today announced that its OpenTV software is now installed in more than 7.8 million digital set-top boxes (STBs) worldwide.
For the second consecutive quarter, OpenTV's technology was shipped with more than 1.6 million STBs, further reinforcing the company's position as the worldwide market share leader in digital interactive television software. This represents a 148 percent increase from 0.6 million STBs shipped in the first quarter of 1999.
"OpenTV's momentum continues to be strengthened by our expanding global market reach and the robust growth of digital interactive television worldwide," said Jan Steenkamp, president and chief executive officer. "We are enjoying a steady stream of real deployments by TV operators, enabling television viewers around the globe to experience interactive television using OpenTV's technology.
"The most recent milestone in our strategic growth plan was the company's announcement on May 7 that it successfully ported its digital interactive television (ITV) operating system to the United States' most widely deployed digital set-top terminal, the Motorola DCT-2000. This is the first significant step as OpenTV introduces its uniquely adaptable technology for interactive television to the North American market."
OpenTV offers a complete, ready-to-deploy ITV operating system that supports multiple services for Motorola's DCT-2000 that is currently in more than 5 million North American homes. Motorola has deployed more than 1,100 cable systems passing more than 47 million households in North America.
OpenTV's software solution can be flash-downloaded to all DCT-2000s currently in homes, anywhere in North America, without rolling a truck to a subscriber's home or switching out a set-top box. Once enabled, the OpenTV/DCT-2000 set-top terminal will be able to support multiple interactive services from electronic program guides and e-mail to e-commerce and video-on-demand.
In addition, the DCT-2000 will be able to support OpenTV's custom- developed ITV applications that allow cable operators the ability to generate immediate new revenue opportunities.
OpenTV also expects to port to the DCT-5000 , Motorola's advanced interactive set-top terminal.
