ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2000
Integrated Environment to Support Mutual Customers
Concurrent Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:CCUR) announced today that it has partnered with WorldGate Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:WGAT) to offer a leading edge, full-feature, interactive television set-top environment available today. Concurrent has integrated its Video-On-Demand (VOD) technology with WorldGate's application layer and Internet on EVERY TV(SM) Service, which features Internet access, e-mail, and Channel HyperLinking(SM), WorldGate's unique technology that enables instant access to interactive programming and advertising. The two companies are cooperating to help set standards for ITV services in the broadband industry by applying decades of technology experience. This unique offering from WorldGate and Concurrent will be demonstrated in WorldGate's booth (#4319) as well as Motorola's booth at the Cable 2000 show in New Orleans, May 8-10.
Concurrent and WorldGate have integrated their technologies and will offer these innovative services for mutual customers on the Motorola DCT2000. The VOD application, powered by Concurrent's MediaHawk(TM) video server, boasts a 1,000-title navigator; a rich environment, including movie previews and movie jacket art; and other entertainment elements, such as music videos. In addition to the home entertainment features, cable subscribers will have access to the Internet, e-mail, and other interactive features through their televisions and existing cable connections through the WorldGate Service. No in-home computer, phone line, or extra set-top equipment is necessary. All the intelligence and control is at the headend, enabling the cable operator to provide the most flexible, feature-rich, co-branded interactive services available. WorldGate and Concurrent have also agreed to begin integration efforts on the Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 2000 platform, to broaden the set-top availability to cable operators.
"With this integration of services, cable subscribers will have the most advanced, interactive communication and entertainment applications at their fingertips, in their homes," said Gerard Kunkel, Senior Vice President of WorldGate Communications, Inc. "With Concurrent's broadband innovations and advanced applications, the decision to merge these services was a natural one. We are looking forward to working with Concurrent in bringing exciting new integrated television experiences including interactive advertising, enhanced television, and e-commerce."
Steve Nussrallah, President and CEO of Concurrent Computer Corporation, said "We are excited to join forces with WorldGate to bring its emerging enhanced TV standard Channel HyperLinking, powered by our MediaHawk video server, to cable subscribers. There has been positive interest in this compelling combination."
Concurrent's MediaHawk is a high-performance, scalable, digital video server that supports from tens to thousands of MPEG1 or MPEG2 digital video streams on QAM, ASI, Ethernet, ATM, and cable networks. The MediaHawk offers the industry-leading performance and provides the most reliable response time achievable in the worldwide marketplace today.
Company Background
Headquartered near Philadelphia, WorldGate, a leader in the development of interactive television, was the first commercially deployed service that enabled cable subscribers to access a full array of high-performance, low-cost Internet services and e-mail on their cable television sets and the cable television infrastructure rather than a personal computer and telephone line. WorldGate is currently deployed domestically in cable systems owned by Buckeye Cable Systems, Charter Communications, Click! Network, Comcast Cable Communications, Massillon Cable, and Prestige Cable. WorldGate has international deployment and trial agreements with 21 multiple system operators in 13 countries worldwide. The WorldGate Service marries WorldGate's proprietary technology with the cable television platform to use either the existing advanced analog or digital cable converter along with a remote control or wireless keyboard to bring the Internet to cable subscribers. Using advanced analog converters, the Service operates at more than 2 times the speed of a standard 56 Kbps telephone modem. With digital converters, the Service operates at speeds up to 38 Mbps, over 3.5 times faster than a typical cable modem. In addition, the Company's patented Channel HyperLinking technology allows viewers instant access from the program or advertisement they are watching to a related Website or locally available information sources.
