OpenTV Announces More Than 11 Million Set-Top Boxes Now Deployed by TV Operators Worldwide; Over 1.7 Million New OpenTV Set-Top Box Deployments in the Third Quarter of 2000

OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV) (AEX:OPTV), the world's leading interactive television and media solutions company, today announced that its OpenTV middleware is now installed in more than 11 million digital set-top boxes (STBs) worldwide.
Deployments in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2000, exceeded 1.7 million units, a record level for the company, and a 72 percent increase from 1.0 million STBs shipped in the third quarter of 1999.

OpenTV's more than 11 million cumulative deployments reinforce the company's position as the world's leading interactive television software and media solutions company. The record 1.7 million units, driven in large part through deployments by EchoStar in the United States, demonstrates traction in the U.S. market and underscores its worldwide dominance in the interactive television (ITV) industry as the company continues to set the industry standard for deployments.

Highlights of OpenTV's third quarter deployments include:
-- For the fourth consecutive quarter, OpenTV's technology was shipped with more than 1.5 million STBs; -- Growth in the third quarter was primarily driven by EchoStar as it accelerates deployment of OpenTV-powered STBs to its customers; -- Three of OpenTV's network operator customers began deploying OpenTV's systems to their customers for the first time, bringing to 26 the total number of operators who have commenced deployments; -- Cable operators worldwide have deployed more than 700,000 OpenTV-enabled STBs to their customers; -- BSkyB reported last week that it now has 4.1 million digital satellite customers, all with STBs powered by OpenTV.
