Newest Release of InterScan eManager, 3.5, Delivers Enhanced
Attachment and Email Format Scanning for Increased Security
and Email Content Management
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2000
Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq:TMIC), the leading provider of antivirus solutions for the Internet gateway, today announced its latest release of InterScan(R) eManager(TM) content security filter. InterScan eManager 3.5, a plug-in to Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall(R), provides network administrators with a set of content filtering tools aimed at blocking spam, protecting intellectual property, and providing file and message blocking capabilities during virus emergencies.
With its enhanced management flexibility and document scanning abilities, InterScan eManager is an ideal security component for today's email-driven business environments. eManager can now scan files encoded in the Microsoft-TNEF format, a format used for Rich Text Format (RTF) messages from Exchange or Outlook clients, and scan content within attached Word documents for more thorough detection of confidential information or offensive language. Improved rule configurations, anti-spam filters, and notification options give administrators more granular control when setting policies. Additional bandwidth management and traffic reporting tools help administrators juggle network resources throughout the day, and act as an early indicator to potential spam or mass mailing virus outbreaks.
During a virus emergency, such as the Love Bug outbreak, customers can halt messages containing virus-laden attachments from entering or leaving the organization at the SMTP gateway, helping to staunch the spread of malware to their desktops and to other computer users. eManager's ability to block messages traveling to and from known suspicious email addresses can also be useful in case of certain backdoor Trojan programs which may initiate messages containing passwords or other network controls to hackers.
More than just a barrier against Trojans, worms, and other malicious code, a content filtering program can be an integral part of an organization's privacy policy. eManager's policy-based filters can be used to scan messages for sensitive company information or inappropriate language and to keep out spam messages based on automatically updated spam source lists or according to a user-selected library of keywords.
According to a Network World article (April 2000), nearly 74% of employees surveyed by a market research firm noted that they were increasingly getting personal emails with attachments at their workplace; nearly one of out five had received at least one potentially offensive email per month from co-workers. An MSNBC news report, citing a 1999 Gartner Group study, estimated 90% of Internet users received at least one spam mail message per week. The distributed cost of spam was believed to exceed $1 billion per year in terms of wasted employee time, server space, and telecommunications resources.
"With its newest release, InterScan eManager continues to be a tool to complement the features of InterScanVirusWall," says Oscar Chang, Trend Micro's senior vice president of product development. "Together, Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall and eManager provide a comprehensive, proactive solution for protecting organizations against the continued onslaught of Internet and email-borne viruses and a myriad of other content threats which can disrupt network uptime."
InterScan eManager 3.5 will be demonstrated at the Computer Reseller News (CRN) Test Center at this Fall's COMDEX 2000 show in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 15, 2000. The latest version of InterScan eManager for InterScan VirusWall for NT v3.0 or above and for InterScan VirusWall for Solaris v3.5 or above is anticipated to be available in mid-November. InterScan eManager 3.5 for HP-UX and Linux is expected to be released later this year.
About InterScan eManager 3.5
InterScan eManager provides intelligent content control over email system by enabling administrators to control message content, block file attachments, and filter spam. eManager 3.5 features include:
An email content filter to block email based on certain keywords
or phrases, enabling administrators to stop potentially infected
email messages from being delivered to unsuspecting users and to
prevent distribution of confidential or inappropriate information
into or out of the enterprise. Filter profiles are based on
keyword lists, Boolean ("not") keyword lists and synonyms. Blocked
email can be deleted, quarantined or archived.
A file attachment blocking feature that allows administrators to
block incoming files by file name, type, etc., while still
permitting other non-threatening email to pass through. During
email virus alert situations (such as this year's Love Bug),
administrators can use the file blocking feature to block emails
with suspicious file attachments instead of being forced to shut
the email system down to protect the system.
