Genesis Image Processor Provides CRT Monitors With Digital
Connectivity And Advanced Color Correction
Genesis Microchip (Nasdaq:GNSS) today announced NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America, Inc. will incorporate a Genesis Microchip digital image processing chip in some of its Ambix technology-enabled line of NEC-branded CRT monitors.
"This is our first announced design win for the gm7010 chip and we're delighted that NEC-Mitsubishi plans to incorporate this technology," said Graham Loveridge, Genesis Microchip's Marketing Director for Digital CRTs. "The chip was chosen by NEC-Mitsubishi because it's the only processor offering 'Ultra-Reliable DVI' and sophisticated color correction technology -- all in one chip."
Unlike the traditional analog CRT -- used for television displays and computer monitors -- digital CRTs connect to video/graphic sources via a digital link, such as the Digital Visual Interface (DVI). The benefits of an all-digital signal path include better image quality, longer cables without signal degradation, plus less reliance on the quality of a computer's video card.
NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display's CRT monitors with Ambix dual-connection technology benefit from Genesis Microchip's integrated color correction feature and its Ultra-Reliable DVI receiver. The latter enables monitors to overcome the incompatibility and cable length problems currently plaguing other DVI links. Ultra-Reliable DVI offers complete compatibility with all known sources and enables increased cable lengths previously impossible with other solutions. Genesis is the only vendor to offer chips integrating both a traditional analog interface and a fully compliant DVI 1.0 receiver.
"We chose the Genesis chip for many reasons, including its speed and compatibility," said Andres Maldonado, Product Line Manager, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America, Inc. "However, it is the chip's sophisticated color correction technology that really sets it apart from other solutions, allowing us to deliver the type of performance our customers demand."
Targeted on consumer and desktop multimedia monitors, the gm7010 digital CRT controller is the first in a series of devices designed to enhance the traditional CRT. Unlike competing solutions which focus solely on providing a digital interface, the chip also provides digital signal processing, which enables quality enhancing features such as Genesis proprietary color management controls and gamma correction to be added to the monitor. With the addition of an Ultra-Reliable DVI receiver, High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), a high-speed 10-bit DAC, integrated on-screen display controller and an integrated analog multiplexer, the gm7010 is the most advanced digital CRT solution available.
Headquartered in Itasca, Ill., NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems Corporation, a joint venture company established by NEC Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The company began North American operations on July 1, 2000 and combines the desktop display monitor divisions of NEC Technologies and Cypress, California-based Mitsubishi Electronics America, Inc. Incorporating the strengths of NEC's worldwide leadership in LCD, Ambix, and MultiSync technologies, and Mitsubishi's market leadership in flat aperture grille CRT technology development, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is positioned to be one of the world's leading display monitor companies.
