RESTON, Va. & FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 2000

Teleglobe, an established and leading provider of global Internet services, and Inktomi (Nasdaq:INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced a technology alliance for high-performance delivery of rich media and web content worldwide. The alliance will provide consumer and business customers with quicker access to content, and ISPs will benefit from reduced bandwidth requirements, as well as earn differentiation from their competitors in local markets. Teleglobe plans to introduce full commercial service in December 2000.

Additionally, Teleglobe's content distribution network and worldwide ISP customer base in more than 110 countries will be able to offer content providers and enterprises one-hop connectivity to a global audience representing millions of viewers and the capability to move content from one end of the globe to the other.

Under the alliance, Teleglobe will deploy the Inktomi(R) Traffic Server(R) network cache platform, Media-IXT(TM) streaming media caching software and Content Delivery Suite(TM) software within Teleglobe's global Internet backbone network and at customer sites. The company will use this core enabling technology to provide caching services as well as live and on-demand streaming services to deliver rich media and web content to customers worldwide.

The introduction of Inktomi's extensible cache platform upon Teleglobe's existing global network infrastructure (IP backbone, international satellite and transoceanic cable capacity) delivers multiple strategic benefits to ISPs. First, Teleglobe's caching service will provide bandwidth cost savings for each ISP customer by pushing offshore content to a local Inktomi server where it is cached for in-country access by customers. Second, since the cached content can be locally accessed, customers benefit from a significantly faster Internet experience and the ability to quickly receive rich media content. Finally, streaming media content, both live and on-demand, will be delivered to each Inktomi server for local streaming to the ISP's end users.

"This alliance reflects our strategic commitment to join forces with those who enable us to develop and bring services such as content distribution to market quickly, based on the needs of our customers," said Lisa Donnan, chief marketing officer of Teleglobe. "Streaming media is one of the highest growth areas in the Internet services market and we will continue to align ourselves with industry leaders like Inktomi to enhance our platform with additional value-added applications."

"Satellite-based streaming media services are becoming a key driver in the evolving content distribution market and Inktomi's leading caching and streaming media technology provides an extensible platform for the build out of satellite networks," said Ed Haslam, chief strategist, Network Products Division at Inktomi. "We are working closely with Teleglobe to set a global standard in this emerging satellite market, enabling the highest quality and fastest path to content worldwide."

As part of the alliance, Inktomi is integrating key new features into its Traffic Server network cache platform to enable the identification and intelligent pre-loading of popular content between Teleglobe's caching and streaming warehouse and managed media servers located at Teleglobe's points of presence (POPs) and ISPs worldwide. Teleglobe will leverage its IP fiber and satellite network to provide high quality streaming media services. Teleglobe currently maintains POPs in more than 20 countries, with expansion planned to 10 additional countries in 2001. To complement the geographic reach of its IP fiber backbone, Teleglobe's Digital Video Broadcast (DVB-IP) service operates on several satellites and currently has a delivery footprint covering more than 175 countries.

"Teleglobe has an enviable combination of satellite and optical fiber resources that few in the content distribution world can match," said Courtney Munroe, vice president of telecom and IP services for IDC. "Teleglobe recognizes that satellite systems are an essential component for delivering content on an international level and is leveraging its existing satellite network to increase the capacity of its content distribution services."
