bv-Admin 4.0 controls mixed Windows environment with unique
Web-based interface and dynamic role-based administration
BindView Corporation (NASDAQ: BVEW), a leading provider of IT administration and security management solutions, today announced bv-Admin for Windows 2000 version 4.0. Included in the release is BindView's unique Web-based interface, the first of its kind to truly support the in-depth management tasks required to administer Windows 2000, Active Directory and Windows NT and maintain parallel environments with ease. Thus, administrators with proper credentials can perform management tasks by accessing the console from a Web browser eliminating the need to be confined to a single machine for administering the network and thereby reducing deployment overhead. Additional features with this new release include dynamic role-based administration; full support of Active Directory, SQL Server support and administration via managed collections.

While managing the transitions from Windows NT, NetWare and Exchange 5.5 from one console, BindView's comprehensive solution enables Windows 2000 and Active Directory deployment for the global enterprise. The ability to scale to hundreds of thousands of users (and groups) by take advantage of SQL Server support helps large environments cope with the growing demands of managing not only internal user ID's but also of securing their external user information comprised of vendors, partners and suppliers. The new version also allows customized views where administrators can "see only what they can manage" -- enhancing productivity and reducing complexity of managing a heterogeneous network.
"We are pleased that BindView is delivering a solution built on the Windows 2000 platform," said Mark Perry, marketing director for Windows 2000 at Microsoft Corp. "bv-Admin for Windows 2000 will help customers to further take advantage of Active Directory as the focal point for manageability, security and interoperability in their network infrastructure."
New Features Address Business-Critical Issues
BindView's bv-Admin for Windows 2000 provides thorough and efficient administration and management of the migration process with the following features:
-- Fully functional Web-Console allows administrators to perform management tasks remotely via a Web browser administering multiple domains and directories from a single interface
-- Dynamic role-based administration is enhanced for fast, easy, scalable management and enforcement of administration policies. As a directory-enabled application, bv-Admin uses Windows 2000 and Active Directory technology to simplify the process of assigning, revoking, and reporting on delegated permissions. bv-Admin dynamically supports all directory objects in addition to local resources like printers and file shares.
-- Full support of Active Directory provides network administrators with full management and administration of the new Active Directory environment. In addition, bv-Admin for Windows 2000 provides a modeling capability which allows for complete planning of the Active Directory hierarchy in the Windows NT 4.0 environment. Modeling greatly reduces the risks associated with migration and enables an efficient and cost-effective migration path.
-- Managed collections allow you to delegate control over a wide range of resources from anywhere on the network. Managed collections represent the next step in aligning resource administration with your organizational requirements.
-- Integrated Console for Migration Projects reduces any risks involved during migration. This capability decreases the time and costs associated managing the transition to Windows 2000
-- Enhanced Automation and Scripting through continued usage of Windows 2000 infrastructure including ADSI, COM, XML and Microsoft's other .NET technologies
-- Single console allows network administrators have complete control of the Windows NT, Windows 2000, Active Directory environments and are able to co-manage network information simultaneously.
-- Improved performance in a number of critical areas including enumerating objects and managing multiple domains and active directory trees.
"bv-Admin for Windows 2000 leverages BindView's expertise in directory management, network administration and migration," said Elisabeth Rainge, program manager at IDC. "Migration periods are clearly fraught with difficulties and risks which can be lowered by implementing these types of solutions."
