SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2000
Roosevelt Middle School in Oceanside will be featured in a Court TV one-hour special on Oct. 17 at 9 a.m., and repeated at 12 p.m.
"Safe Passage: Voices from the Middle School" explores the world as youths experience it, and their perspectives on bullying, gossip, ridicule, violence, choices and consequences, and the overall difficulties of growing up.
Court TV's Catherine Crier and NBC's Al Roker will investigate common issues that affect today's middle school students. "Safe Passage" also recognizes successful efforts to help youths navigate between elementary and high school.
Roosevelt students will engage in an e-mail exchange with students in Cranston, R.I., following a special screening of "Safe Passage" at 9 a.m. in Roosevelt's Multi-Purpose Room, 850 Sagewood Dr. The e-mail exchange enables students to share ideas on coping with issues universal to youths.
The extraordinary success of Roosevelt Middle School's Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) caught the attention of Court TV, which included it in this year's "Safe Passage." Roosevelt is in the Vista Unified School District.
RCCP was implemented by school officials nine years ago in an effort to "get out in front" of potential problems instead of waiting until someone was killed or injured on school grounds. Classroom role-playing, student-led mediation and training for parents are all components of this innovative program that has become a model for how schools teach students about conflict resolution.
