CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 2000
Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:PRSF), a leading provider of business infrastructure software for Internet and next-generation communications services, announced today that it has joined the Oracle(R) (Nasdaq:ORCL) Wireless Partner Initiative, which was created to help independent software vendors (ISVs), application service providers (ASPs) and systems integrators (SIs) build wireless portals, Internet applications and services using Oracle9i(TM) Application Server Wireless Edition.
In connection with this initiative, Infranet(R), Portal's customer management and billing software, will be integrated with Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition. Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition is complete middleware for developing and deploying wireless Internet content and application services, and is targeted for carriers, consumer portals, Application Service Providers (ASPs) and corporations. Those using Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition along with Infranet will be able to manage any size customer base, quickly roll-out new services, and realize new sources of revenue -- all in real time.
Because Infranet has the capability to track practically any event, such as downloaded e-mail attachments, number of transactions completed or length of time on the Web, rating and billing of wireless-enabled applications can be based on the value of a service, rather than just "volume of bytes" used. As additional applications and devices are connected via Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition, the integration with Infranet will enable device and application-specific pricing models to be developed.
"As the wireless access market explodes, service providers must develop pricing structures that both reflect the value of the service provided and support their business models," said Steve Sommer, vice president of marketing at Portal Software. "Infranet's integration with Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition will enable service providers to quickly roll out and support new services, manage customer groups of any size, and develop value-based, profitable pricing structures."
"The Internet is quickly converging with wireless communications, giving service providers a tremendous opportunity to develop innovative new services," said Thomas Kurian, vice president of e-business at Oracle. "Infranet's comprehensive, real-time architecture integrated with our market-leading Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition will provide customers with flexible pricing tools that allows them to maximize the value of new services."
