SEOUL, Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 2000
Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced it won a contract with Dreamline -- one of the leading broadband Internet service providers in Korea - to help build an advanced, high-speed optical Internet network for its customers.
Dreamline will use Lucent's dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system that expands network capacity by simultaneously transmitting multiple wavelengths of light across a single fiber strand. Lucent's WaveStar(TM) OLS 400G has a maximum capacity of 400 gigabits per second (Gb/s), and will enable Dreamline's network to transmit approximately 80 million, one-page e-mails per second.
"Our customers' demand for high-speed Internet is dramatically increasing, and deploying DWDM technology is the only way to offer them the reliable, high-bandwidth service they need," said Mr. Kim, II Hwan, president of Dreamline. "Lucent's DWDM systems will help us provide best-in class broadband services for our customers."
Enhanced nationwide high-speed Internet service for Dreamline's subscribers will be available in late December, 2000.
In addition to the 400G system, Lucent also is providing network management software (Sub Network Management System) to help Dreamline manage the increased bandwith.
"In an effort to meet the increasing demand for multimedia service, carriers are looking to optical networking technologies for fast, efficient transport," said Dave Allan, chairman and chief executive officer of Lucent Korea. "Lucent was the first company to bring DWDM to the market, and we continue to lead the industry with ultra-reliable, high-speed systems."
Lucent has supplied WaveStar DWDM systems to other large Korean carriers, including Korea Telecom, Dacom and Hanaro Telecom. Lucent also has supplied various optical networking systems to Dreamline since 1998, including Lucent's FT2000 and WaveStar(TM) ADM 16/1 systems.
Lucent's WaveStar OLS 400G uses the company's leading edge DWDM technology, used by carriers worldwide as an economical means of increasing the capacity of their fiber - optic networks. Based on Lucent's Bell Labs patented technology, Lucent's WaveStar system combines up to 80 high-capacity optical channels over a single fiber. The system maintains a high transmission performance, ensuring a low error rate over a very long reach of up to 640 kilometers (about 400 miles). Recently Lucent was honored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for its technical innovation and leadership in DWDM.
Established in 1997, Dreamline, based in Korea, provides broadband Internet services through its optical backbone for leased line and data communications services, broadband Internet access for residential and commercial subscribers, and multimedia portal and exchange. The company also offers solution services and data center-based applications.
Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, NJ, (USA) designs and delivers the systems, software, silicon and services for the next-generation communications networks for service providers and enterprises. Backed by the research and development of Bell Labs, Lucent focuses on high-growth areas such as broadband and mobile Internet infrastructure; communications software; communications semiconductors and optoelectronics; Web-based enterprise solutions that link private and public networks; and professional network design and consulting services.
