TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 2000
Broadening its offerings in the infrared data transmission market, Infineon Technologies today announced the Very Fast Infrared (VFIR) 16 Mb/s system at World PC Expo. The VFIR system enables notebook, mobile phone, printer and PDA manufacturers to develop products featuring high-speed data transfer necessary to keep pace with the increasing size of data files containing video, digital images, and graphics.
Infineon's VFIR Development Kit, including PCMCIA controller module, transceiver dongle, test program, and driver, enables manufacturers to immediately begin design development. Infineon's VFIR system, compliant with the Infrared Data Associations 1.3 standard, is portable as a VHDL macro to support IRDA-enabled products using embedded processing.
"Imagine being able to transfer a 10 MB video file from your PDA to a friend in less than 10 seconds -- the Infineon solution enables this exciting scenario," said Mike Bottini, vice president Optoelectronics group at Infineon Technologies. "We are offering a VFIR system that can be simply programmed, flexible for all platforms, and, allows our customers to create features that will truly differentiate their product."
The VFIR controller uses the same software drivers for all transmission speeds, making upgrades to 16 Mb/s effortless. In addition to 16 Mb/s, legacy support ensures that the controller and transceiver provide data transmission rates of 4 Mb/s, 1.15 Mb/s, 115 Kb/s, 9.6 Kb/s and ASK. The VFIR transceiver is pin compatible with Infineon and other leading suppliers' IrDT products. Users will be able to transmit at four times current transmission speeds with no change in power consumption. To further conserve power for hand-held devices, the transceiver has a standby current of 3.0 mA, and shutdown current of less than 50 nA.
